I thought these new SSD drives were meant to be cheaper :(

£375 + VAT?

Oh for the love of god.

Where the hell are these "affordable" drives? It all seems to be going backwards...

Why does everyone seem to expect that the latest tech will be cheaper? Its never ever been this way! Even 3Tb mechanicals are twice the price of 2Tb ones.

Newer SSD's are much faster than the old tech, so it makes sense that there is a premium for them.

Of course, the price will come down eventually!

^ this is true, the old stuff will be cheaper and still be faster than a mechanical HD.

however does everyone want old ssd tech? the new tech is near £400 for 250gb! and will keep getting faster and more expensive for the mid term.

however the good news is mechanical isn't totally dead just yet (think thats good) because as ssd`s get faster so are mechanical drives and also there getting larger for less.

looking at the 340gb F4 samsung, its cheap and can do 150mbs which is v quick to be honest and the 500gb or 1tb may be 160mbs-170mbs, who knows new mechanical tech may come out that reduces access time to 5-6ms and gives 200mbs+ for 1tb @ £50-60 im sure its not far off and then theres raid 0 given the cheap prices :) 300mbs + isnt to be sniffed at even in mechanical format

Raptors pretty much were the fastest desktop drive for seek times, SCSI 15K drives were better, but seriously noisy! Certainly not for the desktop market.

The G2 drives were cheaper then the G1 drives at launch iirc. I also remember people/websites boasting about how much cheaper these drives were going to be too.

But the "old" tech doesn't come down in price, it gets replaced by the newer tech, so basically you either pay these astronomical SSD prices or you stay with mechanical for the foreseeable future.

At this point no one wants to hazard a guess when "mainstream" SSDs will be available, because there seems to be absolutely no intention of letting SSDs lose their "premium" price-tag.

When you say "these" you don't mean these.

The G3 aren't released yet and have been delayed several times now leading to a conclusion that Intel is either redesigning them or waiting for the competition to release their cheaper counterparts (in the meantime selling their over-expensive G2 and 510 drives).

It is still early days yet. Once other manufacturers start producing drives, there will be more choice.

What are these drives exactly then, a reworking of the G2? I thought the shift was to smaller, faster, cheaper, less power consuming 25nm and yet the spec on these say it's the old 34nm.

I'm a bit confused as to who these drives are aimed at considering most of us appear to be waiting for the promised G3 line. I wonder how many customers Intel lose to the Sandforce crowd while they delay the launch.

I do like the new capacities though. 240/250Gb or there abouts would be the sweet spot for me and would replace my current 2* 150Gb VRaptor setup without make any compromises.
