Hey folks,

Had a call last week from my Banks anti-fraud team alerting me to some recent purchases...

...Not from OCUK they know better than to question those :D

1p Tesco Mobile - never used them ever.
£1 AOL - never used them ever.

...And wait for it, I actually laughed at this one just because of the random nature of it;

£800! Christian Louboutin shoes! Declined thankfully!

Anyway, I have a feeling it's because I bought my friend a Lush cosmetics gift for Christmas, and they had their website hacked and all users were warned card detail security had been compromised!

Whilst it's a pain, as it was my debit card and im now without one for a few days, it's also quite re-assuring to know that the banks are so quick to act on these things.

I know it's generally better to use a credit card online, but there are times im sure we all use a debit card.

Anyone else got some similar tales to tell? :)

And you didn't cancel the card?

I suspected I may have had a virus a few years ago (nothing could find it, but every now and then got an unrecognised '... is attempting to connect to <ip>' message from the firewall.

Cancelled the card and changed my banking passwords - can't be too careful.

Santander are really on the ball with it aswell, although the automated system that rings you, 2 different transactions from the same place were classes as two different things, luckily i am pretty on the ball with my finances so i knew my last 15 transactions and where they were to

In December 2007, my card got cloned somewhere and some dude decided to withdraw €300 from a European ATM. At that point, my last time abroad was 2003, so 4 year gap 2003-7, so I dunno how my card got over there. I phoned my bank (Alliance & Leicester) on the day it appeared on my statement and they reimbursed it electronically in 2 days. My new card arrived about 10 days later. It happened on Christmas Eve, so I wasn't a happy bunny not being able to party as much without a card, but at least I wasn't skint in January! Late '07 / early '08 was a horrible time for me in general though. A run of bad luck.

My experience with Lloyds anti-fraud team have only been good ones. I've used them a few times, one was a mistake due to a restaurant using a merchant terminal from a taxi company 100 miles away! The other was a company continuing to take payments despite repeated requests for them to stop. Both times they refunded the money first and investigated later.

Oh, and during my visit to Tunisia, they blocked my card after I forgot to inform them I was going - annoying at the time, but the kind of pro-active anti-fraud measures I like to see.

My latest experience was after buying some food and drink in a little newsagent/tobacconist type shop in London Victoria (in the promenade bit leading to coach station, if you know it). I handed over my card, and immediately thought the man on the till was acting weird with his colleague. He then tried distracting me whilst taking the terminal out of view - I then hear what sounded like a camera shutter noise (you know the fake one on phones/compacts these days).

It took a lot of effort to remain calm and composed, but I figured the best course of action would be to just cancel the card rather than a confrontation seeing as my coach was leaving in less than 10 minutes. Fortunately I have a few accounts with Lloyds that I can move money about in easily, so being without my card for a few days is no more hassle than logging into my internet banking and moving a sum of money to another account.

Of course, it could have been nothing but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
