Intel 510 Series "Elmcrest" 250GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive £374.99 ex VAT

Hi there

Guys the prices of SSD will not be coming down, the manufacturers are aiming for all out speed and with this the price goes up.

No manufacturer has plans for reducing prices, so those of you expecting SSD's to come down, well its not happening yet, the performance is increasing and the price is either similar for more performance or they are going up.

Maybe give it a years time. :)

Why does everyone seem to expect that the latest tech will be cheaper?

In regards to these latest Intel SSDs I think the reason why there are people expecting these to be cheaper than the previous generation is this: There was a lot of talk starting from almost a year ago that the transition of 32nm to 25nm was able to offer almost double the capacity at the same price. See this for just one example...

The new drive uses 25nm IMFT Flash, which means we should get roughly twice the capacity at the same price.

It's the G3 that will be the "double capacity at the same price" SSD and not today's release of the faster performing Elmcrest range. It's this last bit about the G3 being cheaper rather than the Elmcrest that those expectant users seem to have missed. It's a reasonable assumption for those users to make since, at the time, there was no talk of Intel releasing another range of SSDs other than their existing X25-M Gx line :)

How are these going to compare to the G3's? Are the G3's going to be faster or better price/performance?

See my link above to Anandtech. It shows the G3 to have better sequential writes and better random 4kb IOPs in both directions.

Thank you! I've been feverishly searching for articles claiming that we'd see double capacity at the same price.

I guess Intel junked the idea of releasing the G3 now then, they've been pushed back to later in the year?

I'm sat here, 250GB drive in basket, debit card in hand. I just can't bring myself to pay £1.80/GB when the C300 is £1.41/GB. :/
