Been shopping...

Nice upgrade, how does the extra 100bhp feel, I hear the V10 is a lot more revvy and likes to be stoked up to the redline :)

It is really happy to rev, but still has a reasonable amount of torque.... it just peaks higher. I was a little worried that I'd miss the push in the back you get in the e39 when you open the throttle at 2-3,000 rpm, but it's not at all lacking and besides, it's so easy to drop a couple of gears :)

it's interesting that you prefer the sound of the V10 ...I actually prefer the old V8 in the E39 myself.

I genuinely think the sound is in a different league :)

ISTR you saying the E60 wasn't as good as the old E39 round the 'ring, but then hadn't the E39 had fairly substantial suspension/brake mods?

The E39 had KW v3 coilovers & ACS ARB's all properly setup as well as AP front brakes. It felt more composed and I felt I could make better use of the available power. But that was quite a world away from the stock E39 M5 setup from memory of when I test drove a standard one.

The brakes would have made a huge difference... I quickly lost confidence in the stock setup when pushing hard on the Nurburgring so found myself holding back a bit to allow a bit more braking time!

Did you check out the B5 too?

Without having drivien either, the B5 looks more appealing.

The styling doesn't quite appeal to me. I'm not too keen on the Alpina bumpers and really don't like the wheels. Also didn't fancy a torque convertor automatic.

The wheels really are a love or hate affair! Interesting to see others' thoughts but doesn't change mine in the slightest :)

You are sharing the car?

For the time being we can manage with one car, as we have since Olly sold his 530i. We'll probably pick up an older/cheaper car to run alongside this at some point.

I like them wheels, anyway how much was the car out of interest?

Looks a lovely car, the right colour for the E60 M5 I reckon. Enjoy.

You say you got a better than expected price for your E39, is that a 'reasonable' or 'good' figure?

Any plans for it?

Spent several hours cleaning my car today, I'm still at the begining of my E39 love afair, so still lots I want to do.

Poped in to Polished Bliss on Friday to buy some bits n pieces. Discussed with Rich regarding having a full paint correction done. It's a lot of money, but would look amazing afterwards.

How are you finding the interior the e60 looks a bit bland is the M5 version higher spec? I love the fit and finish of the e39 M5 nice leather door handles centre console and high gloss trim, it really is a nice place to be on long journeys.

I doubt he knows yet as he's not taken delivery.

I drive an E60 LCI quite a lot now - and elements of the interior are better than the E39, and some things are worse.

Pros:

a) More 'modern' materials - less of the elephant-grain style of plastic.
b) Nicer fonts on the instrument cluster display
c) Softer, nicer warning tones
d) iDrive
e) More up to date feel inside
f) Feels slightly more luxurious, in the standard models there are more leather trimmed areas than the E39 - the centre console is leather trimmed as standard and so are the door handles, though your console in an M5 is already leather.

Negatives:

Not as well built. There are areas where you can tell they have cheaped out - put your hand in the door bin of an E39 and it's perfectly and completely carpetted all round. Do the same on the E39 and they've used a less nice material and only carpeted the bits you can see. There is a lot of this sort of stuff in the E60. General fit and finish is excellent and better than the pre LCI car for sure, but it isn't quite the 'hewn from granite' feel of the E39.

Stupid cheap looking plastic twirly knobs for the climate control which lack any sort of screen - you have to read off the temperature from the dial, just like in a Peugeot.

If you dont have the smokers pack specified, then there are NO 12v plugins in the front of the car. There are two in the rear console for rear seat passengers and nothing for front seat passengers. Completely stupid.

Seems to have a higher tendancy to rattle than the E39...

That first picture is possibly the most unfortunate angle I've seen on a M5.

Very nice bit of kit, enjoy it.

Oops I kind missed that bit and scrollied to the pictures :o

I must admit the twirly knobs put me off getting some sort of E60 and that a facelift was out of budget I passed on the option.

I kinda like the elephant grain plastic (knew i'd seen that texture somewhere before haha) but then again I've had jap sports cars the last 10 years, which while not fantastic still better than euro hatch back plastic.

Still if I keep the M5 for 4 or 5 years I think I would get an F10 after this and skip the E60.
