external enclosure 3.5” ESATA power

Hi, I’m wondering if you can get an external enclosure 3.5” ESATA that is powered from the pc and not from a separate mains power adaptor.

eSATA doesn't carry power, so no. Current laptops often come with eSATA/USB combo ports, which support power-over-eSATA ("eSATAp") but I don't believe I've seen any eSATAp devices, which is a problem...

USB 3.0 is a better idea methinks.

But you still need separate power for a 3.5" external disk so that doesn't help the OP.

A 2.5" external disk can be powered from a USB port.

I thought USB 3.0 could provide more power than USB 2.0? Not sure if it's enough to power a 3.5" drive though...

Up to 900mA compared to 500mA but there are no external 3.5" disks powered by just by the USB socket.

3.5" disks need both 5V and 12V supplies. USB and powered eSATA only supply 5V.
