A few people are saying 'you get a year free', whats that all about then? Free map updates? I bought the TomTom XL IQ Routesin June last year and am already being pestered in the TomTom Home program that my maps are out of date and i need to pay them to update my map at a cost of £14.85 then pay them £19.80 for a 12 month subscription.

/edit. Looking at the Tomtom website, you get a free map update within 30 days, thereafter you have to purchase them at £4.95 per quarter.

  • Don't. I owned this for less than 24 hours. It was good but then I updated the maps and could no longer fit the whole of Europe on the device. I asked TomTom and their advice was to add the maps as and when I needed them. Great, except I bought it to travel across the WHOLE of Europe in one trip. They were very unhelpful and so I told them where to go and Halfords accepted a return (also stating "that is **** isn't it") recommending a Garmin but I took the money.

Did you not delete all the other languages not needed?

They take up quite abit of space and you are unlikely to use any other than English.

Was just the maps from what I can remember. Came to 2.3GB? And there was only 2GB on the device. My biggest gripe was flash storage is so cheap and the XL is not a cheap device.

Oh, I just found the email trail, was legendary they told me to use central Europe and then buy the UK maps. Despite having bought the device hours before with the whole of Europe including the UK.

My 2002 Jaguar (with 2002 disc I think) offers 7-digit postcode entry. Can't believe it's not offered on a much newer BMW!

As for the op, I stand by the fact that TomTom is best, although everyone seems to have a different preference!

Ahhh. Lots of recommendations for that Sat Nav, now soon as I am about to purchase, people say don't buy it! Haha, I hate having so many choices.

I find my Tom Tom sometimes trys to take me through farmers fields on phantom tracks. It also throws random wobblys with journey times such as...

To be honest if both my ancient Navman and newer Tom Tom are sat there I'll grab the Navman unless I think I'm going to need the traffic announcements.

Probably because you have it set to 'walking route' mode ;) ? Although that would be a random walking route - maybe it just calculated the time for walking but routed correctly.

Sadly, I'm one of the satnav generation but I now only use it for finding somewhere once I'm there. Using an atlas as above means I often go the more scenic and enjoyable routes. I popped up to Edinburgh the other week and just avoided the motorways following my mates map reading and preference for less congested routes... had I been on one I would have seen the border for as beautiful as it is!
