Disgusting Mail article, need to rant...

I don't read the Mail, but a friend saw this and linked it to me.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...er-kills-Taliban-bullet-new-book-reveals.html

This is absolutely disgusting glorification of killing and makes me feel sick

The comments section is infuriating too, since when did it become 'cool' to shoot people, Taliban or otherwise? :(

I despair sometimes.

This is part of dehumanising the enemy.

Its the attitude that a lot of people have, there are not just enemy combatants they are evil, non-human and cowards etc etc.. Killing them is therefore morally right, and to do something morally right is cool or to be admired.

Anyway it's distasteful to go on like you would in call of duty or whatever.. "double kill"... "You see that shot, hahaha, epic"

Yup, another two roadside bomb planters out of the way. We’re not out there for a picnic, it’s a war. There’s no glorification it's just a good war story, shame we don't have more.

Yes but what else do you do against a superior foe?

Surrender?

how do you think the british troops talk to each other when on the frontline ?

Watch documentaries like the Ross Kemp on Afghanistan one and listen to how they talk amongst themselves. From what i've seen it is very much that. The article merely reflects the tone of the book.

At the end of the day its a soldiers job to kill the enemy. If de humanising them makes it easier for them who are we to disagree ?

This thread is about how the information is presented. How the killing is made 'high-five' cool ..

Imagine, if you would, a taliban soldier hacks the head off a British soldier with a machete.

Then the local Afghan rag runs a story with the headline 'Ha, he deserved it'. In the middle of the paper they give a free 'cut out' paper machette and a big picture of a British soldier's head, for a laugh, so readers can pretend THEY are hacking off the soldiers head (competition for who send in the best picture depicting them pretending to hack off the printed soldiers' head).

Would you find the article insulting/disrespectful? Or is this 'fair enough' because we're their enemy and killing is 'supposed' to be happening ...?

No because they are trying to do bad and we are trying to do good.

Illegal as agreed under the auspices of majority international agreement and note that I specifically said "non-state" terrorist organisations, If you disagree with Democratic ideologies or a recognised Governments actions that is a different debate entirely.

Iraq was illegal?.....when was that decided?

Oh please, on what legal basis did the US/UK go into Iraq? Do you not recall the frantic attempts to pin WMD claims on the Iraqis? Ignoring Blix and the UN? Unilateral action? Any of that ringing a bell?

And w.r.t. "majority international agreement", surely you mean "majority western-sanctioned international agreement"?

The Taliban are not Terrorists, so your points fail.

Well done on intentionally missing my point completely. I was illustrating the methods which win the west no friends, especially in a quagmire of a war such as that in Afghanistan.

This is the same propaganda the Nazis used to drum up support for war, and has anyone forgot this war is illegal or even why our troops are in these countries? I bet these people feel really liberated now when they have to walk around worrying if some moronic trigger happy Redneck is going to kill there family

I know what I mean, and show me where the Iraq War was declared illegal?

Your personal opinion has no basis in whether it was legal or not.

I got the point, it is just that the point was rhetorical nonsense. The death of Karsai's cousin doesn't illustrate anything other than he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I meant the Iraq war illegal but forgot to put that! There is no need to be in any of these countries it's just imperialism and the control of foreign goverments and resources, just like what's kicking off in Libya now they are using this as an excuse to send in troops to "liberate" them because the old excuses won't work so western governments and there media whores are manipulating this and stimulating uprisings so we can roll in as heroes to force out these dictators who we have been supporting for years but they have served there purpose and are dispensable now

Nice collateral damage he got there.

Seriously though, It's war people die. The soldiers themselves cheer when they kill a group of taliban, does that make them like the daily mail?

It's a touchy subject, the soldiers are there to do their job. The daily mail is just showing information on snipers in particular.

By the way the afghans and Iraqis have every right to fight our troops as we are the ones invading there country, wouldn't we be ****ed off and be in the streets fighting if foreign tanks started rolling down our streets, troops raping and killing our families? And then be angry if we were called terrorists for daring to oppose invasion? If this is the case then our grandparents etc where terrorists because they where fighting an invading force in two world wars

This guy is doing it right! Clearly the only way to win the war is to get that damn 25 Killstreak!

Okay, I'll stop with the cod jokes now :D
