Can't you download it and use your key to activate?
Compared to which game exactly ? I assure you Playing QL on competitive level - especially 1v1 requires extreme amount of skill like movement, aim, map control / timing items, strategy, reading opponent's actions... It's like you could be practicing QL for next two years but the guy who lost in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIaNeogyCko would still own you (or me) to zero or negative score.

Generally people are comparing to q3 when they say this.
Although ql is for all intents and purposes the new, modern, q3 there are still significant gameplay and engine differences between the 2 games.
I really should get back to QL - only really touched it during the beta many years ago and now my PC is not my main system anymore. Does QL feature CTF and which versions? Does it have the OSP or 3W maps too?

Yes there is CTF, only normal and insta versions I believe. I didn't play Q3 so I'm not sure about OSP / 3W maps. There are some great CTF maps though.
Cheers oL - for some reason I had recollection that QL originally was 1v1, DM only, but as I said it was a very long time since I last used it, I know it supports Mac but I wont be playing it on a MBP

Shame the frame related physics has gone, did they get rid of the wierd Q3 bouncejumps (cant remember the proper name - if you were a certain height on certain parts of map, jumping on a point would mean u could bounce back to same height)

1v1 (Duel) is probably the game type the game is most known for, and is the game type most played competitively in tournaments etc. But there is also Free for all, Team DM, CTF. Also Clan Arena is a new game type to QL, it's round based where everyone starts with full armor, weapons and ammo, and there are no pickups on the map. Then it's just the last team standing, if you die you don't respawn until the next round, think CS without the bombsites
One more is Freeze tag which you may or may not know, it was a mod for Q3.
About the physics, I'm not sure what you mean about "bouncejumps", perhaps you mean doublejumping / chainjumping, which was implemented into QL a while ago. Basically where if you jump off two "edges" of objects in quick succession you will gain speed. I do know that the physics are for the most part, the same as they were in Q3.
Ok, but "no skill" game is still completely miss-guided description of QL esp. when COD and similar are mainstream FPS games of today. If you compare vanilla Q3 vs. QL then you could hardly claim QL to be "dumbed"down version instead I would call it just "tweaked" mainly to make the gameplay more balanced, better graphics, tweaked maps etc.
Therefore I think the "dumbed-down" view comes from the fact that QL doesn't suport CPMA. It is opinion of many CPMA players, something like CPMA Q3 is superior = more skill demanding compared to Vanilla Q3. And maybe they are right. But it's not like being best CPMA player automatically makes you also best vq3 player (indeed Vo0 has lost matches in vq3). Generally vq3 is slower more strategical (cpma players would probably add "more boring"), while cpma is faster and at lest to me has more of a WOW feeling when watching to it. But both take different skills to master and both require tons of skill to play well.
PS: And Vo0's videos in q3cpma are of course sepctacular, not only his fragmovies but just "normal" gameplay like this

Just found it - they were called overbounces and caused by enabling pmove and jumping on particular parts of the map - was found out by trickjumpers quite late in Q3s life - pretty sure it was in one of the opcpromo vids - will try and find which one...

Ah right, pretty sure you can't do that in QL
Yup still played, clanbase still runs its twice yearly cups for it too which I've just signed up to in tdm for about my 15th over the last 10 years lol.
It runs on windows 7, but can take a fair bit of ini tweaking these days to get running well. Switching to later d3d/ogl renderers and setting up frame rate limits amongst other things in the ini file help. Having said that even on xp I had to do that with newer hardware.
It's crazy really, I spend a fortune upgrading my PC to keep up with the times and the most played game for me is still UT!

UT3 is still played by a small group of hardcore fans. I am one of them, and think it is a real shame that the game is not more widely played.
