Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

lol. Just read [West Coast] Americans are panic buying anti-radiation drugs and geiger counters in preparation for the fallout.

Surely, it would take something much more severe than Chernobyl for any radiation to even get to the West coast unless I'm mistaken?

Radiation even from what has been released now will eventually get to most places as particles disperse into the atmosphere. But it would be such a tiny amount it's not even worth thinking about. Even a Chernobyl scale disaster wouldn't significantly affect the USA. China and Korea would probably be worrying slightly though...

Great, so whilst they pour resources into fixing the roads, thousands of people in the worst hit areas haven't even had food or aid yet. 5 days down the line some emergency teams are only just reaching worst hit areas.

RT News are reporting this is going to be
"chernobyl on steroids"

One thing that has struck me as totally stupid is that a group of British search & rescue people were recently turned around and told to go home at the airport in Japan because they hadn't been supplied with some correct piece of paperwork by the British Embassy I think it was?!

I'd have thought they need all the help they can get - this is as good a time as any to cut the red tape and just let them into the country!

BBC said:
# Britain advised its nationals currently in Tokyo and to the north of the capital to consider leaving the area
# France urged its nationals in Tokyo to leave the country or move south; two Air France planes were sent to begin evacuation
# Australia advised its citizens to consider leaving Tokyo and the most damaged prefectures

Good to see the French are retreating again...

I've not actually seen that anywhere but a while ago in this thread...

Surely the roads are a key part to delivering the majority of that aid...

and how exactly do you expect aid, food and transport out.... to actually get IN without clearing the roads first?

edit... Beaten like a ginger step child

I was just checking the earthquakes bit and there were 370,000 fatalities from the Haiti earthquake and I'd pretty much forgotten about that to be honest. That was only a 7.0 mag.
