Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

I'm so glad Sky News are running those CGI information boxes about the effects of radiation on the right side of their screens during their news coverage of this. I had no idea radiation was as bad for you as they say.

Typical Sky News reporting style. Complete muppets.

Problem with this 'event' is it's a media outlets wet dream, they can spin the story all they want, 90% of the public have no idea what's actually going on or have a clue about nuclear power generation, so you end up with the situation of an uninformed news editor writing about something they don't understand and trying to convey that information to people who have no idea.

GO NEWS!

Also sad dog is sad :(

The dogs are fine now, if you read the description the men who found them thought one was dead at first but soon called for help and wished they brought food :(

According to the update they're in a shelter now and thousands have posted interest in getting them adopted so for these two dogs, things are looking good at least :)

People complaining about Sky News... why d'you watch it and give them a ratings figure?! I think most newspapers and TV bulletins should be boycotted, otherwise they'll just get worse.

They appear to have cut down on the number of status reports coming from Fukushima. Let’s hope no news is good news.

If things weren't bad enough for Japan, the kid has just poured a bucket of water onto my Bonsai tree that I had in the backyard for trimming. Now I know what it feels like to be affected by a flood :(

Not sure if this has been posted but have seen this on the BBC News website

Helicopters dumped tonnes of water to try to prevent a meltdown of fuel rods, and media reports said water cannon had now joined in the operation on the ground.

Following the crisis, China suspended approval for new nuclear plants.

The confirmed death toll from Friday's 9.0 magnitude quake, which triggered the tsunami, has risen above 5,000.

Police say 5,178 are confirmed dead and another 8,606 people are still missing.

You've got to hand it to the Soviets, they drafted in over 500,000 men to "clean up" the Chernobyl. Many of them died or received huge doses of radiation whilst serving their country. They basically treated it like a full scale war.

Contrast this with Japan's response, so far... and it is pretty poor. They seem to be tip toeing around the reactors now that they know radiation is high. So the only way out for them will be robotic technology. (Which the Soviet's used as well!)

:\

That's because the plants havn't exploded due to a meltdown.

It's hardly poor. All well and good saying that from our position but imagine being them over there! Soviet did use robotics but the radiation was so high it made the robots "go mad" and it just went off the building. :p

The Soviets attempted to use robots to clear the graphite pieces off the roofs they'd landed on following the explosion. The only problem was the robots got such a high radiation dosage, that they broke down pretty quickly

What's sadder is that the first troops sent in to shovel the graphite didnt actually have anti-radiation suits, so they wore chemical warfare suits instead :( Cue lethal radiation dosages in ~15 mins.

50 Japanese nuclear engineers are staying behind at the Fukushima Power Plant to try and prevent a nuclear meltdown. They are getting the same amount of radiation per hour that a nuclear engineer receives in his/her ENTIRE career

True Heroes.

Just seeing some numbers, 87.7milliSv at 90metres, they said only 5milliSv at 1000ft last night and its 250milliSv by 30Metre's, not sure if thats above the reactor or above ground level.

But wholly not surprising as they moved the safety level from 100millsv to 250millisv yesterday, not safety level but max level they can legally send people in. 1000millisv is where the first real signs of radiation poisoning set in but its very treatable with pretty low rates of deaths till you amass 3-4milliSv, thats why they are heavily limiting how long these guy scan be out there.

First police water cannon they used missed the top of the reactors so went out pretty quick. The SDF water cannons are bigger trucks (but lower pressure, or less protected? not sure why they went with the small one first) they appear to be working and assuming they get water into the reactor 3 pool they'll start hitting 4, and 1 I think, I'm not sure that 2 is "open" to have water shot into it, not sure 1 is either, but its had its roof blown off so more likely.
