What config. will beat my 5970 + 5870 (tri-fire)

i fight like this ALL the time
its not as if your current gfx set up is **** is it, for the sake of a say 6 months and £750+ I would and am waiting for next gen cards to arrive, this will be the big upgrade time, for me and a lot of other people.

Wise words GJ02, thanks.

I'm concerned that these cards won't be worth as much in 6 months, being that they are over a year old already (and possibly old tech now), hence more cost to upgrade in 6 months time.

im in the same boat now, and i only bought them in december, i have them on the well known auction site now, to try and get money back, if they go i will get 1 580 as this will be more than enough till next gen time
thing is, no matter what you buy now, its gonna loose money come next gen time. its a no win situ.

sell your cards now, stick in an okish budget card and then save for the next gen cards. maximise the profit on your old stuff.

That's what I was thinking. I don't think they will be worth much in 6 months time.

Because we enjoy messing around with hardware, well I do anyway. :)

If you don't think that it's worth the outlay then wait for the next gen.......still you could always sell a pair of 580s then. ;)

You know I like messing too mate. And yes I can sell the 580's on when I get the itch again.

@OP : Does your current set-up struggle with anything, any issues at all ?

Not in particular, I don't know why but it feels a bit outdated to be honest. Plus I like the features that Nvidia has to offer.

The MSI Twin Frozr OC GTX 580 looks like a viable option?

Looks to be a nice card (as does the Asus), with a review by our very own Reflux. :D I would go for a single card myself (at least to start with), if you're prepared to spend the extra on a 580 then fair enough, though I'd look at one of the 480's on special offer. I'm not sure if the SOC and other revised models means they have lower power draw or not.

Thanks kind Sir!

Are you referring to the ASUS with the huge triple slot cooler, if so it won't fit in my case

The MSI Frozr certainly looks the bees knees though.

I will do some more research.

I'd do this.

When I built mine, the 470 and 480 were far too hot and noisy, and the 1GB 460s were £60 more than the 768mb version, so I threw one of those in, and I have to say it performs admirably. I have plenty of older games to get through, so I'll be playing the big, power hungry games another time, but things like Company of Heroes maxed out at 1920 x 1080 is impressive for the little guy. It hits 30fps average on Mafia 2 with everything maxed as well.

I've been having more fun playing Flatout 2 (fantastic in 3D!), Serious Sam 2 etc. in multiplayer to care about not being able to max everything out there, if I'm honest.

wouldnt you be better of just dropping the 5870 and using just the 5970 as tri-crossfire is crap?

I want to know the answer as I have the same setup -trifire is not crap -it scales really well-I should know I own it.

6990 crossfire is the only setup that's really going to be noticably a lot faster (I think) as 5870 trifire is at least equivalent to 580 sli or 6970 crossfire.

Not trying to be funny but I guess a single 5970 will outperform it more times than not.

You aren't being funny but you are talking crap.

OP I'd wait out this generation OR get 3 580's in SLI so you really notice a difference OR 6990 crossfire. Both of these will be noticably faster but I can't see 580 SLI really doing it.If you wait a bit the way things are going you should be able to pick up a pair of sapphire 6990's for £650 each as OCUK has all the stock so is taking the **** with prices (sorry pricing products according to the laws of supply and demand)
