Gigabyte GTX480 SE First Impressions

Im running sli gtx 470's on a corsair hx 850w, pulls 604w from the wall running heaven, cards are oc'd at 750/1500/1674, 280w at idle, this includes my 24" monitor as well.

The account holder as in the credit card account holder. :p

Anyways, how much can you overclock with this card before making it too hot and unstable?

I hit 850 core with a little extra volts. Could probably go higher with a bit more time. Fan speed never exceeds 65% with this OC with fan speed set to auto.

The GTX480 is only slightly faster then a HD5870.

Really  So you're also saying with that statement that AMDs current top end single gpu card the 6970 is only slightly faster than the 5870?

I would say both are quite a bit faster tbh but I suppose it's all subjective, here's a comparison between the 5870 and 480 link.

This extra oomph in the 480 and 6970 can mean the difference between playable framerates compared to the 5870s sometimes unplayable framerates ie dropping below 30.

i guess it really depends on what res you game at, anything up to say 1680x1050 and the 5870 will do you fine for the most part,

but 1080p and above I'd be wanting something with a bit more horsepower and a little more vram than the ageing 5870.

(Sorry to repeat this content, wanted to post in both topics.)

3 weeks ago i was wondering what card series to go for as i wanted decent performance with low noise when under high load; i settled with the GTX 560Ti series. A week back i was deciding what brand to go for; i settled for the MSI Twin FrozR GTX 560Ti. A couple of days on, about to purchase, i come across this offer and i'm now in two minds about what to do.

The 480 series originally impressed me but then i saw the temperature/noise levels and, well, it deterred me completely. Now this has popped up and i am hearing whispers of it being a lot quieter: The e-mail advertisement i received a few hours ago even went as far as saying it was "silent". But how quiet is this piece of kit? Is it comparable to the 560Ti series or is it still in the same league as the original 480s?

Noise isn't a problem for myself, rather everyone else around me. I don't want to have a hair-dryer running in the background whilst my family/friends are trying to watch TV or communicate with each-other! Likewise i don't want to be sitting in a typical empty living room scenario and hear a wind-tunnel in my Desktop; bound to hear airflow, yeah, but i would like to know if this noise is part of the background or if it's a very clear annoyance. I'm just not sure what to think of this card! D:

I'm in exactly the same boat!
I thought I'd decided on the MSI 6950 2gb at £209. Then saw this card and again, I can't decide.

In the end i bit the bullet and ordered this card. As long as i keep it in perfect condition, i can return it within 7 days if i do find it too loud, so there isn't much harm in giving it a go! :)

Chuffed with that :D

Compared to my last card:

GTX460 1GB @ 850/4200: P3841

GTX480 1.5GB @ 750/3800: P5249

And that is only a mild OC on the 480, compared to a to the limit OC on the 460.

:D

If only it was that simple, well actually, maybe it is and I'm just complicating it. Maybe I'll just toss a coin....
The only other factor to make my mind up would be if I wanted SLI or Xfire, Cuda/ Eyefinity/ 3D.

On this occasion I picked 6950>70 as at christmas it was the best bang for buck and had my eye on Xfire.

If I was buying now though, I would have had to factor in the price for a new psu to power the 480 sli setup and 6970 xfire scales better than 480 sli in the games I play.

You may hear the usual 'drivers are rubbish' argument but in my honest experience both sides can be as good/bad as each other and most of the time pebkac(I've had more cases of pebkac than I would like to admit to;)) is usually to blame.

From Geforce cards all the way to 7800GT sli, I always stuck to Nvidia because I just liked them, until I saw sense and bought the best bang for buck. I went to ATI 4870 because it was the best value I could get for what I was willing to pay, then a 5870 because Nvidia were late to the party.

If you don't have a preference for red/green, then get the setup to suit you. You should always buy the best bang for buck.

A good read i am really intrested in one of these cards and maybe 2 at some point and your post has convinced me :) Any idea what power they use under full load. I'll be ordering friday so i am hoping they come on offer this week :)

I never had a ati and was really tempted by the 6950 but with stuff like the 3d vision and pysics on the geforce card seems a better option now. The 580gtx is way out of my price range and the 570 is over priced imo.

Order placed, this will replace my good old(only 2years old) gtx275. Maybe I can finally max out Crysis :p.
