Were we right to get involved in Libya?

Iraq opened a can of worms that is still to be played out.

Apart from the country now being split in three with the Kurds in the north wanting a greater Kurdistan(part of Turkey and one of the 'stans of the old Russia). That looks like a peaceful future there.

The Iraqi around Basra are the same religion as Iran so maybe, only maybe they will join a greater Iran.

The rest, Saddam's tribe now have land but little to no oil after being in the driving seat. Resentment there.

Sounds like a recipe for stable relations and security in the area.

I have noticed that Iraq has an olympic and soccer team again now and they wont be shot when they lose.
So they definitely have a bit more freedom then they used to have and my guess is that that is just the tip of the ice-burg and there are plenty more freedoms and things they can now do that they couldnt under Saddam with out being dragged of to jail or torture cells

Although with this freedom they have realized they can now kill each other with out Saddams Iron fist slamming down on them. Which is just ****s a lot of things up again.
So they have probably gained good and bad from the Iraqi war and its not always black and white.
 
I saw on Newsnight that Hague made a speech attacking brutal dictators and oppressive regimes, and then later that evening he's meeting the Saudi defence minister in London and sucking up to him - you couldn't make it up. As Jeremy Paxman pointed out, the only difference between Gaddafi, the Saudis and the Bahrainis, is that Gaddafi is a weak dictator whereas the other two are more brutal and in the pockets of the Americans so we give them a free pass. The usual Western hypocrisy at its finest.

did saddam really do anything after the first gulf war? serious question as i cant remember anything.

the whole point of the second iraq was because aparently he had been making weapons of mass destruction yet non were found and no proof of him actively attempting to.

didnt he even let weapons inspection people in? before shock and awe?

its fairly obvious the whole point of that war was really to get rid of saddam the honory citizen of detroit :rolleyes:

this war is only about removing gaddafi and nothing else no matter what the UN resolution says.

obama is already calling on gaddafi to remove his forces from cities in libya so the rebels can take the territory what a ****, why dont they tell the rebels to stay in benghazi? (sp)

the UN are a bunch of liers... anyone noticed a lot of journalists commenting on the brand new looking ak47's the rebels have started carrying? i bet america supplied those and they claim they want a ceasefire in libya BS!

it wouldnt suprise me if america had something to do with getting all of these protests in the middle east going.

I don't think he actually let them back in. If he had there would have been no war. Regardless, we know of plenty of contries that actually have WMDs e.g. North Korea, of course we do nothing about those.

Apparently quite a few of thse weapons have been "appearing" on the egyptian borders. I hope the rebels do manage to win now. Since we have gotten so involved the best case scenario is for the rebels to win and Gaddafi get kicked out.

The funniest thing is if China or Russia went in to Saudi Arabia to 'protect civilians' and 'liberate the people' the west would go in to protect the Saudi dictators and we'd have WW3 on our hands.

It's not about the people, it's about installing puppet 'democratic' governments. ie. they get to vote on which western stooge they want and if they choose wrong we punish them like we did with Palestine.
