Gurkha awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

Heh!

Have any of you ever met a Gurkha? It will amaze you more when you realise that they are quite small :o

When I worked for ASOS one of the security guards was a Gurkha and about 5 ft. He was one of the nicest and most polite people I've ever met and always put a smile on anyone's face :)

That makes fanatstic reading - what a little madman.

-250 rounds of machinegun ammunition
-180 rounds of rifle ammunition
-six phosphorus grenades
-six high explosive grenades
-five underslung grenades
-one claymore
-machine gun tripod
-sandbag

This right here will stop me from ever questioning the amount of ammunition you can carry in computer games. In the future I'll just assume my character is a Gurkha.

When I was younger we were very lucky to have this man;

stay at our house on a numerous occasions. He'd struck up a great friendship with my father during the Borneo conflict because my father brought his Pack Howitzer up in close support during the action that he won the VC.

A small but very humble man that had a wicked sense of humour and you knew you didn't want to get on the wrong side of in a fight;)

Respect to Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, but what the hell does he need to do to get a VC  were they not dismembered enough or something

hehe those Nepalese guys always remind me of this:

Pity the gov/mod don't give them the respect and honour they deserve without a lot of media arm twisting.

A lot more it seems. There has only been two VC awarded since 1982.

I didn't realise the rules on "group" actions. If say a ship or a body of men all do something equally brave and deserve a VC, the officers pick one officer and one non officier to receive the VC and two more are awarded on a lottery basis to the rest.

Did he kill any of them?

Seems like a like of ordanance for one man. I'd be interested in his confirmed kills.

Heroic Sergeant Dipprasad Pun HOISTED a giant machine gun off its mount and HELD it as he blazed away at a dozen attackers.

Firepower ... Sgt Dip held 30lb gun and let fly 750 rounds a minute

He is believed to have killed three and wounded several others with the gun - weighing well over 30lb and hammering out 750 rounds a minute.

A source said: "It would have taken a superhuman effort to hold the gun and fire it. Apart from its weight, the recoil is colossal."

Firefight ... he held off a dozen Taliban from rooftop, killing at least 3

The 15-minute stand came after Sgt Dip, 31, was left at a checkpoint in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand.

Spotting a Taliban attack, he ran on to a roof to man a 7.62mm general purpose machine gun mounted on a tripod.

As the insurgents came over the wall Sgt Dip realised he could not lower the gun enough to hit them. So he yanked out the pins locking it down - CHUCKING the heavy tripod at the enemy - and lifted it up.

He also beat off the attackers with grenades and an SA80 rifle before reinforcements arrived

I was told a story about the Gurkhas by a former work colleague, I can't fully recall what battle/war it was but they were being given orders through a translator and the mission was they were to be flown in and dropped out of planes from 1000 feet, the translator went to give them the orders, he came back and said the men think this is a tad unreasonable but they were willing to drop from 500 feet, they didn't realise they would be using parachutes

Extremely brave men indeed.

G4S have a ghurka services security division. They're used where clients want both the prestige of top quality security guards, and the assurance that they won't leave their post and nip in for a cup of tea just because it's raining. They were (probably still are) guarding the olympic development site.

Also, apparently the kind of people who will quite happily play dead with their faces in the dirt for a couple of hours if its necessary for a training exercise.
