Intel G3 SSD launched. Reviews are up now.

Damn Intel you fail to deliver the prices I was hoping for. Time to shell out a bit more for something faster methinks.

The whole point of these drives was to be a larger capacity for a smaller price but the price is barely smaller so I cant see these being a huge success apart from the very large models as people have already said.

Intel 120GB 320 = £175

Are intel retarded? who would buy this over a c300 that's better in every way seemingly

10%? I don't think ill be ditching my raid array anytime soon then. Disappointed by intel here see what it's like in 6 months

Intel SSD 320 40GB £67 -- £1.80
Intel SSD 320 80GB £120 -- £1.61
Intel SSD 320 120GB £157 -- £1.41
Intel SSD 320 160GB £217 -- £1.46
Intel SSD 320 300GB £398 -- £1.42
Intel SSD 320 600GB £803 -- £1.44

FTFY

Raw conversion + 20% VAT ---> Price per GB (real capacity)

Expect £10-20 extra on the lower capacity drives and up to £50 mark-up on the more expensive drives (with prices always closer to the rounded up tens) in most stores.

I'm happy with these drives, they don't temp me to ditch my C300 128GB by any means ;) For £1.2/GB I grabbed a real bargain.

It looks like a few places have stock of these already, and pricing released - Not bad, £179 for the 120GB for example. I was hoping for a better price drop than that though, closer to the £150 mark for that capacity.

I guess as the market saturates with these new generation drives on the .25nm process we'll see some more drastic price drops.

Is it just me or is the performance a bit rubbish for the high price?

Surely for that money you could get three cheapo 64GB SSD's and stickem in a RAID array and it would make the intel look silly?

Unless im missing something here.

You're probably right. But a lot of people get the Intel SSD's because of their reliability.
The cheapo drives unfortunately die a lot more often.

I've been waiting for months to buy one of these. I took one look at the reviews and the prices and bought a Crucial C300 64GB instead. Intel is extracting the urine with these drives.

This. I can't afford to loose my system due to poor hardware/software and this is the reason why companies will buy Intel. Time = Money.

G3's look good to me when compared to the previous G2's. Doesnt' the 160gb 320 double the throughput of the same sized G2 for something like £80 less than the cost of the G2 (OCUK still show the old one in stock so you can compare the price here).
Maybe compared to the other offerings they look less impressive performance wise but Intel drives have a great reputaiton for reliability and I think performance dropoff is less than other drives as time goes by, although trim I would think should minimise this anyway.
I would have thought the MTBF due to improved number of cell writes is also improved.
I like the thought a 600gb SSD, that would be all I need for a second high perf storage drive and for VM's and extra games that can't fit on OS drive with an old fashioned (ha ha) mechnical drive used for backups

Is the pricing shown the usual early adopter tax and we should therefore expect the price to settle down a bit soon? Do we know what the RRP is for these drives?

Mr Krugga's reply seems spot on.

I've been waiting forever for G3 Intel goodness so sod it, I ordered a 300 gigger. It's on way and I'll have it tomorrow :)

Still not too bad in terms of price however.

I think the main reason people buy Intel SSDs is for the reliability. I will certainly be picking one of these up as soon as possible!
