not for 3rd party or fully comp as car would be on my driveway and sorned/immobile but purely for theft? technically it won't be a legal car as it would be a rebuild/engine build but it would need to be insured for theft? (no plans on leaving a cossie on a driveway without theft insurance!!! lol)

Is this now a legal requirement (for a sorned car to be insured) did I read somewhere?

No, SORN'd cars don't need to be insured, but if it's still taxed it needs to be insured, even if it's locked in a garage or on a private driveway.

Which is a damn stupid law if you ask me.

Not being pedantic, but you are not 100% on your wording there. If you need to Tax a car, it must be insured. The car can still be insured and have run out of tax, even if its SORN'd. :)

No.

The law was recently changed to make it a requirement for a taxed car to be insured.

Even if it's locked away, never used, it has to be insured if it's taxed.

oppisit way round.... if its Taxed it needs to be insured, if it's Sorn, do what the hell you like with it.

bullit

Yeah, sorry - bedtime I think. :D

EDIT: I thought you were quoting me there. However, I don't see that there's a problem with having a SORN on a car that's in bits. Its keeping it insured when its in bits, that is stupid.

no they are saying that if its SORN , OR TAXED it has to be insured

wrong again....

The new vehicle insurance law - don't be caught out

Stay insured - stay legal

Watch a video on the new rules on being insured and penalties you could face

Stay insuredIn early 2011, the vehicle insurance law will change.

If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.

The only exceptions are:

•if you have made a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) for the vehicle
•vehicles that have been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 - unless they are brought back into use

taken from gov.uk...... you were saying.

Yeah I don't get why people are confused about this.

Previously it was only a crime to drive a car without insurance.

Now it is a crime to be the registered keeper of a car without insurance, unless it is SORN'd.

If it has SORN, then you can still choose whether to insure it or not.

That makes. And it only took 15 posts before there was a post that made sense :D
