Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I recently updated my 2.1 SGS to 2.2 over Kies and it's much slower than before. Moving between homescreens is laggy, and all of my games have taken a massive framerate hit.

It's made using the phone a bit of a chore and I'm not sure if I did something wrong. Everything works, but it's a lot slower and choppier. I remember reading that 2.2 was meant to be faster.

right, considering moving my gf's SGS to a custom rom as it is running like a dog.

One thing I'm concious of though, is that in the desire world there are 2 kinds rom: those with htc sense and those without. Those without lose the social media integration into contacts and all that jazz, which I'm positive I'd be killed for if i did that to her phone.

So basically, is there a similar divide in the samsung world? What's the best rom in this situation? She's on 2.1 atm, does it need to be flash to official 2.2 first? without trapesing through 2741 posts in this thread, is there a link to a guide on how to root in the safest manner?

Cheers for your help,

Tom.

Try a factory reset and format of the internal sd card. Probably some old files left over from the previous firmware causing problems. Back EVERYTHING up first though! If you need to know how to do that, just ask. If that still doesn't help, reflash the firmware.

No real divide, the only things you may lose are Samsung apps (none of any real use on their market) and the samsung social networking apps. That said, the ROM of choice (Darky's 9.5) does include the Samsung social apps if you want them to. So Facebook contact integration etc. I wouldn't recommend a bleeding edge custom ROM for your gf though, I'd go with a recent stable official firmware and make sure you've formatted and factory reset (like above) to avoid problems. It should run fine on JPY or JS8 for example. Go back a few pages and I think I linked a guide to flash a stock ROM. If not, ask again and I'll fish out the link.

GingerBread 2.3.3

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901&highlight=lagfix

running like a dream with 0 problems for me.
Seems faster and snappier than my Darky 9.5 rom.

Enjoy all.

I think this was posted a little while back, it's not bad but it isn't a release and people do have problems with it. No choice on kernel yet either I believe so I'm holding fire until we have an official Gingerbread base to work from. Obviously only go with the leaked Gingerbread if you're happy to deal with problems and possibly reflash etc. Good to hear it's faster than Darky's, keep us posted on that to see if the speed diminishes at all, it may be the 'new ROM' feeling. I'd like to hear your experiences in a couple of weeks if you don't mind. Hopefully we'll have an official version by then too!

anyone help with a galaxy s problem that's just happened to me (yesterday), its not rooted by the way and running the latest JPY available from samsung.

bought one of those big battery's as the phone gets heavy use, inserted and switched on. the phone took longer than normal to boot and when it did i was at the set-up screen as if i had just powered on for the first time (thankfully it had kept my details).

once i got to the main screens (again, as if i had just ran it for the 1st time), the stuff i had put there was gone.
although on pressing the apps button all the stuff i had installed was still there but when i tried to run a lot of it they would either come up with a force close program not working message or load and then bomb out after a few secs/mins.

i'm un-installing each problematic app as it happens and then re-installing them and they appear to work ok afterwards.

i also lost all my contacts (i connected phone to Kies and copied my backup contacts back over) and browser bookmarks although the phone itself is working with no problems as a phone or for receiving text and the internet is working as expected.

so the question would be... any ideas on what occurred or is it just one of those things that happens?

p.s.
the battery works well and i've got roughly twice as long out of it today.

When was the last time you turned the phone fully off before that? May have been a problem just waiting for a reboot to happen. In that case, I'd backup what you've got left, factory reset and flash again.

Probably noticing a pattern here with my posts....these phones are so complex it's usually much quicker to backup and re-flash than try to struggle along and troubleshoot the issues.

Scared the crap out of myself last night.

I booted up Kies and used it to back up my contacts, pics etc. Noticed the message on the home screen regarding a Vodafone-approved firmware upgrade available for my phone (baseband JS1, Android 2.2.1).

Thought to myself "Hmmm, this is Samsung's own program for doing this ... what harm can it do?". WRONG!

Started the process off and the phone went into download mode - it got about three quarters of the way through the process and Kies popped up an error message, casually asking me to try again later. Can't remember the precise wording, because I panicked at that point, having visions of my month-old phone lying knackered with a half-updated firmware.

Quit Kies and disconnected the phone from the laptop. Hooked them all back up again and Kies advised me that I should begin emergency recovery. Had to take the battery out, put it back in and do a three-button boot (down volume, home and power key). Clicked 'recover' and prayed.

It completed, thank God, and I ended up with a clean install of JS1. The phone feels slightly snappier, particularly when waking from screen lock - whether the battery life is any different remains to be seen.

Point is, it's a lesson learned. I had been far too casual about this and never again will I attempt an update via Kies. I'm wondering now if not doing a factory reset before I started might have prevented the issue - to be honest, I was expecting Kies to either ask me to do so or for it to do it itself behind the scenes. Either way, Kies will only be used for loading music onto the phone or backing up the contents from now on.

Thanks. I didn't do a factory reset, so that's probably it.

I'm afraid I don't have a clue about backing up. Can I do it through Kies or is there another solution?

If your 3-button recovery works, it's very difficult to brick the phone. As you found out, Kies is generally regarded as less safe to flash with than Hemidall or Odin. Don't bother with branded firmwares when you can more safely flash to a crud-free and much newer generic one. Just my opinion. Glad you sorted it out!

What do you have on your phone that you want to keep?

Contacts, games, and apps, mainly. I'm only using the internal SD card at the moment. I expect a lot of my contacts are linked to my google account, but many are just on the phone.

Well, you should be able to get all the contacts onto google without much fuss. I managed to do that with mine when I first set up the phone.

As for applications and games, try Titanium Backup (on the market, needs root). That should take care of the ones you've installed. Make sure you backup to the external sd (and remove when/if formatting your internal SD) or back up to a PC/Dropbox etc so there's no risk of accidentally deleting the backup.

Thanks. I'll check out titanium. I should've mentioned that I'd like to save text messages as well. I expect it can do that.

What's the easiest way to root, and should I go back to the kies-approved ROM or look for something better?

Thanks to somebody on here I now have all my contacts in Google so I never have to worry (and I've backed up to a file so hopefully protected).

You don't need Kies, it's horrible.
My phone is in USB Debugging mode which means you plug in your cable, pull down the bar at the top and 'select to copy files to/from your computer'.
You can now pretend you're on an external hard drive.
I do this every day of the week.

I feel it's only right I give myself a pat on the back for this one :o

On a side note the roms for this phone are really coming good now awesome awesome phone

Just in time for the release of the SGS II!

Looking forward to a nice stable and smooth Gingerbread though.

Does anyone know if the SGS will get TouchWiz 4.0 or has that been debunked already?

Hi guys, Just been having trouble with my SGS. Lots of programs Force closing, so decided to reset to factory defaults using the 3 keys to start. No its just stuck on the boot screen. Whats the best thing to do? :(
Thanks

How long has it been stuck? More than 10 mins and you've probably got an issue. Leave it a little longer and see if it boots.

Otherwise, pull the battery, see if it boots, if not, reflash the firmware I guess.
