Why buy a convertible then keep the roof up ALL THE TIME?!

Probably the worst are those who drive around with the roof up but the window down.

Saw a lad doing this today. All the Windows down but not the roof.

In general, yes it's a bit odd, but...

I only ever found four reasons to have the roof up on my old MX5:
- Such a short journey that I can't be bothered (e.g. under 2 miles to the local Tesco)

...as above, if you're just popping out somewhere and cant be bothered with folding the roof back, it's easier just to wind the window down.

That said, putting the roof down on the MX5 is so simple. Un-clip one latch, pull the roof back slightly and if you get the technique right, you can push it back and it falls down and clips into place behind the seats under it's own weight. Ive also now mastered putting the roof up again without even having to turn around in my seat :)

Plenty of motors out yesterday with the roof down and I can't blame them, it was a cracking day. Still the odd few here and there but as has been pointed out even though you have a drop top I guess sometimes you just want to get from A to B.

The classics seem to have come out of hibernation as of last weekend too

I had the T-Tops off my Z28 when I went out for a country drive earlier. I'd forgotten how much I love having grit in my eyes and insects in my teeth.

It was definitely worth it to hear the V8 better though.

On a serious buy slightly silly note:

I am quite tall and thus my head seems to be high enough for the top of my head to be completely in the flow of air coming off the windscreen (the top of the screen is almost eye level for me if I dont slouch in the seat!). At normal speeds this is fine but when pressing on it is a pain in the arse... do you tall guys wear a hat to combat this?

Sounds like you're too tall for the car, maybe you should upgrade;)

Seriously, can't you get some low jdm tyte seat rails?

Do you not have a windscreen?

Have mine down most of the time when the sun is out, only exception is when the Mrs doesn't want to arrive looking like a haystack.

In what way?

I've never thought it looked "right" to have the windows up when you have the roof down. I do use the windbreaker though, makes loads of difference :)

I just tilt the seat back a bit more :) I have leather seats which are on the lower rails anyway (I have no actual proof they are lower, just from my experience sitting in them vs the cloth seats).

All this talk of roofs...I personally class mine as an umbrella. If it isn't raining hard then the roof is down. I tend to put it back up when parked though, not for security reasons but just to stop people throwing stuff in it or birds dropping their load on your seat. I've had the bird droppings happen a couple times (I have to park near hedge/trees at home) and don't want a repeat of that. Also stops the seats, steering wheel etc getting to melting point in summer. I also never have the windows all the way up when the roof is down, normally in the winter about two thirds down and windbreak up, summer = all the way down and wind break optional depending on type of driving.

Opening the roof on a half decent convertible takes 7 seconds. I do it at traffic lights :D

I'd have to really race to get mine down at a set of lights, the risk of the lights changing before the roof drops is too much!

As long as that? ;)

I reckon I can have it down in less than 5 :D

I guess some rooves are slower though, hence why it's easy for people not to bother for short trips.

I dunno.. Unclip latches, quickly unzip window, hurl roof backward.. Doesn't take long. I had a roof-down race with l0rdMike and his S2000 and it was about even :D

Roof up sometimes for me under the following circumstances:

- taking shortcuts through some bad Middlesbrough Council Estates
- commuting home from a very hard and stressful day at work when I CBA
- when it is very windy (the Elise needs every element of aerodynamics and downforce it can get since it is so light)
- when driving at speed (80MPH+)
- when eco driving (to save fuel - minimises drag, saving fuel)

As the Elise was never originally designed to have a roof (it was an after thought towards the end of development) the aero dynamics are actually better with if off. Lift is increased by fitting it.

I've only been driving to/from work lately and so the roof has stayed up (it has been overcast/raining for the last few days and couldn't be arsed with the faff of the roof when I got to the office).

Other trips, roof = down.

If you think an MX-5 roof is a faff you would probably have a nervous breakdown if you had to put an Elise roof on.

I think you are correct with the S1 variant, however the S2 short-tail is different - was a 'Discovery Channel' Lotus factory visit 'Building the Elise' which mentioned about the aero that you talk of. But the facelifted S2 changed the dynamics of the car as well as the weight.

Lol, too true about the MX5 - Elise comparison. The S1 takes quite a while, so much so that people have been known to move house to buy a garage to avoid having to put the roof on ever again*!!
