Hi folks, im in the market for a good quality external HD. I have just bought a Motorola Xoom and wanted to put a lot of blu ray films on to an external HD for travelling purposes.

Can anyone recommend a good quality one that possibly looks quite stylish and would be perfect for this type of thing ?

Thanks

What size, both capacity and physically? 500gb - 3tb? 2.5" or 3.5"? Note that a 2.5" drive will have a lower capacity.

Hi, the bigger the better really TB wise. Not very technically minded so what is the difference 2.5 or 3.5?

I just would like to put a lot of blu ray films on to it and I don't want it to be huge in size as it will be used for traveling.

Cheers

Well i have scoured the net and found a 3TB external HD a WD one which i wont link as its not allowed.

Does anyone have any comments about this HD ?

It is a 3.5 i think but its fairly small sized, would this work with my Motorola Xoom ?

Cheers

On a practical level I would suggest maybe getting one or two smaller drives.

Realistically there is only so many films you can watch whilst you are travelling, therefore I would have thought a 1tb or even a 500gb would suffice.

With any drive there is always a chance that they will fail. If you split you film collection over more than one drive, then at least if one fails you don't lose your entire library.

By the way when you say travel what dO you mean, is it weekends away or will you be out of the country for months?

Yep sorry i didnt say i travel for long periods at a time 1-3 months and the countries i visit dont have very good channels or TV, so i wanted quite a lot to fit without taking too much. I have a 60 inch Plasma at one of my homes abroad and a 50 inch at my weekend house in the mountains (which has no signal at all, so thats where it would be used.

I can see your point about losing them and its not a bad idea, do you have any suggestions ?

Thanks

External drives are as large as internal ones, sometimes bigger if they have multiple drives inside. If you want more than 3TB then get a dual bay USB enclosure and stick a couple of 3TB drives in.

Remember that using USB it will take FOREVER to fill large disks, up to 30 hours for a 3TB one. So you'll want to connect the drives via SATA or eSATA then stick them in an enclosure if you can.
