Who's the fittest on OcUK SA?

I do a 33 mile ride most mornings, then commute 6.5 miles to work by bike. Normal weekend has me riding for 14 hours/a couple of hundred miles usually :p

While that's great, do you have a life? :p

I don't meant that to come across in a bad way - if you enjoy it then you enjoy it - but with friend and girlfriend commitments I could never ever spend every weekend riding.

I'd rather have a balance and be semi-fit and healthy whilst enjoying all of the other aspects of life, including beer and burgers!

At first I thought you were talking about women !!!! i.e the fittest !! and was hoping to see some pics..

:(

Anyway, before I go to work I do a pretty rigorous 10mile cycle every morning on a mountain bike AVG speed 18mph. Then at lunch time (workday's only) I do 20mins elliptical and 10min rowing, then about 20min of fast don't talk to anybody mid-heavy weights. Unfortunately I am a creature of routine and i don't experiment on other things, just stick to what I like.

I thought I was fit, but you know, its' what you are use too ! The other yr, we started a football team at work, that first game, I thought I was going to collapse and die. I was feeling a little cocky at the start of the game thinking I'd have all the energy.. Within 15mins I was praying they'd sub me off ! Thinking get me outta here ! Next game was easier and after the 2nd I was running up and down the pitch for the whole 90 without breaking a sweat. But it did take a couple of games to get used to it, plus my butt cheeks were sore after that first game ! FROM THE RUNNING !!!!

You know, I use to cycle a lot, and drink beer at the same time !! When I worked in the city, and lived in the suburbs, I'd cycle into work, and then my missus would cycle up and meet me at 5pm, we'd hit a pub together, then make our way down the Thames stopping in other pubs, then make our way home on the bikes.. By the time we got home we were pretty wobbly, but it was all good fun. 30mile isn't too bad, thinking back my work was 12mile, so that would be 24mile there and back, and then I'd go for a ride upto say Richmond Park on the weekend.(erm once again hitting the pubs). It was good fun, and one of the things I miss most about England. The roads are far more accommodating towards cyclists then where I live now.. Here you have to stick to a certain route, otherwise you'll have a big overweight red-neck driving his V8 meandering across into your path.

My mate is currently running the Marathon De Sables - 151 miles in 6 days across the Sahara and is sitting in a not too unimpressive 252 out of 837. I have no idea how he does it - he's only really been running with any degree of seriousness for 18 months or so.

rings a bell!

Perhaps I'm training for something so the extra effort at weekends is required ;)

What makes you think I struggle with diet, I eat nearly 4000cals a day during the week, more at weekends, means I don't have to be picky ;)

I have to also mention that the day I did my Ironman it was 97degrees!! Ruined it for so many people, became unbearable at points!

That's incredible, suprised it went ahead in that heat. Can't imagine how tough it must have been.

Don't know how you guys who run and cycle a lot manage to get the calories in. I ride about 8 miles a day and run 5K once or twice a week and I'm constantly having to stuff my face to keep up. Just seem to be permanently hungry :(

I find having three breakfasts is the key. I have between a half and a full Soreen malt loaf before I leave the house with 200ml fruit juice; that's between 450 - 900 calories.

Then when I get to work i have porridge and if I'm still hungry I'll have a sausage and bacon baguette at about 10.30.

Lunch is soup and a sandwich.

At 2pm I'll have a flapjack.

4pm is time for more porridge.

Snack when I get home, something like a flapjack or a granola bar.

Whatever for dinner and usually a dessert.

Probably why I am carrying about 8kg too much.

Some of you guy are nutters, that goes way past just general fitness into proper endurance. I knew a guy who did full on ironmans in Texas summertime and did 30+ miles a day on the bike daily, impressive stuff.

Not quite the same league but just did the 5k swimathon in 1:23:46. Not all the results are in yet but sitting 22nd in the 30-39 age group, so I'm pretty happy with that! :)

June will be the peak of the endurance as the Bike Radar Silly Commuter Racers seek to defend their TFL Cycle Challenge title from LFGSS and The UBS Cycle Club; 1,000 mile month, and then some.

Yeah the River was 84 degrees :(

If I ever had a solid job and enough free time, I'd absolutely love to try something like the Iron Man. I think the fact that it's such a test of mental toughness is what really appeals.

Just the idea of setting a personal goal and meeting it, when it's something so few people can or would choose to do would be a bit of an achievement.

I think it's a bit like running a marathon - you can do them to impress folks, or because you want to set yourself a challenge and match it. Maybe that's a better description of fitness as it encompasses the mental aspect?

i.e. is there really as much of a quantitative difference between 'I want to run a marathon' and 'I want to bench press twice my body weight?' as we think?

I used to be extremely fit. I would love to get the time (and money) to get back to how I used to be and reach my potential.

97 degrees must have been horrible

Saying that my made just completed the Marathon des Sables (151 miles in 6 days) and finished in 124 place out of 800+.....he was running in 54 deg C (130 deg F) heat at some points. Even in the shade it a was a 'cool' 47 deg C. Mental :eek:
