Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

No problem glad you got it sorted as has been said on here a few times its pretty hard to brick these phones assuming you have recovery and download available

I think this was posted a little while back, it's not bad but it isn't a release and people do have problems with it. No choice on kernel yet either I believe so I'm holding fire until we have an official Gingerbread base to work from. Obviously only go with the leaked Gingerbread if you're happy to deal with problems and possibly reflash etc. Good to hear it's faster than Darky's, keep us posted on that to see if the speed diminishes at all, it may be the 'new ROM' feeling. I'd like to hear your experiences in a couple of weeks if you don't mind. Hopefully we'll have an official version by then too!

Of course mate, ill keep you updated! :)

Yeh that fresh rom feel (much like a newly formatted pc) is nice and clean and sharp! :D

Also ive got a custom kernel installed from supercurio, which allows lagfix + ext4. Using quadrant on stock 2.3.3 i got around 1000, with lagfix+ext4 applied i got 1600. So an improvement but quadrant doesnt mean all that much, its the interface that is incredibly smooth thats more important.

Heres the kernel

Also just so you know ive only had 1 minor problem. The gallery works, but the movement is really smooth and fast, but the animations are a bit too fast.

Feeling very chuffed with myself this morning - after that horrendous experience the other night with Kies, I've successfully updated my SGS firmware to JS7 via Odin. Including, this time, a wipe and reformat of the internal SD card beforehand.

All went smooth as silk really and I must say there was something satisfyingly geeky about doing it this route rather than Kies! Phone is working perfectly - contacts, pics and music all restored from Kies backup.

Only slight hiccup is that as a result of flashing using the JS7 files from samfirmware, my product/sales code is now XEE and should apparently be XEU - will this cause any problems if left as it is and is there a way to set it to XEU?

I think it might just give the wrong set of languages for you. XEE still has English though so that's fine, not sure if it's UK English however. You ought to have flashed a firmware with XEU, but it doesn't really matter that much tbh. First time I flashed with Kies, it changed mine to KOR! It can be corrected.

Can i ask how do you format the internal SD? what process?

I'm sure Alex will probably beat me to it, but I basically took the SIM card out as recommended in the tutorial I was following and restarted into recovery mode.

Switch off, hold down the volume UP button, home button and press the power key. Release the power key but keep the other two held down and eventually you'll get a small menu appear on the screen. Scroll down to the SD card options using the volume rocker and press the home key to select the option you want.

Alternatively, with the phone on, go to settings, SD card and phone storage, Format SD card (under internal SD card). Then reboot. That will work if you don't have the 3-button modes too. I usually factory reset at the same time. You shouldn't factory reset custom ROMs as you can lose stuff.

Also, if you're using a Voodoo kernel, when you format the internal sd you will lose the Voodoo folder and the disable-lagfix file (or folder). So if you're not using the lagfix, on the next boot it may enable it automatically, which takes a while.

I did a titanium back up of all my apps and data. I then wipe flashed to Darkys 9.5 (first wipe flash for a few versions).

I have restored some apps I wanted. But now they dont show in myapps in the market for updates.

3 have just dropped the price plan on which you can get the Galaxy S for free. I've read the reviews and they are all glowing but then again they are 9 months old. How does it compare to the current gen of single processor Androids? Can it still hold its own? I have no doubt the next wave of phones (dual processor) will dwarf it though but for more £££.

Still one of the best out there imo. Nexus S is better, Desire HD is pretty close, depends what you want. I expect there'll be some real bargains to be had on the SGS soon.

Has anyone replaced their backplate here? By that, I mean the battery cover/rear shell of the phone.

I think an excellent upgrade would be to swap it with a slightly grippy one instead. I can't stand the cheapness of those silicon cases and the hard shells add too much bulk. The SGS does sometimes seem a bit slippery, would be good if it gripped to the desk/hands a bit better.

There were some on the auction site a while back, not sure how decent they were but they're gone now. Can anyone put me onto something like this?

The only thing that put me off this phone was the pentile pixel layout, which kinda negated the pluses of the AMOLED screen.

Thankfully the SGS2 resolves that! :D

Ahh, I really want this now! I have a silicon case and it adds so much bulk and nastiness to what should be a sleek phone.

Anyway. I'm waiting for Odin to root my phone. It's been about 5 minutes. Should I be worried? Using this guide: http://www.dkszone.net/root-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-any-stock-rom-firmware

There's no progress bar under the digging android guy.

Information in Odin:
<ID:0/003> Added!!
<ID:0/003> Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/003> Initialzation..
<ID:0/003> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/003> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/003> zImage

Edit: Hmm. Took the battery out and tried again. Seems to have worked. Rebooting now. Still scary.

Hanging on the Galaxy S logo screen, hasn't booted up. Should I wait?

Tbh they already are here imo. £14/month by redemption, phone comes free on mobiles.co.uk. Currently going through the painful wait of my existing contract expiring

Just flashed MIUI have to say this thing is great really loving it for the time being. Runs so smooth like just crazy fast, has so many kewl features. Gonna install all my apps now and play around with it. But if you havnt tried it already you really should. Didnt take long to install as well.
