To cut it short I have been ill twice within 4 weeks starting a new job. The first occasion I had food poisoning or something and felt awful for 4 days(wed-sat) and I only missed half a day of work. I had been sick etc and barely eaten in those days.
Last night the worst head ache I have ever had came on mixture of too much sun on the weekend and staring at a monitor all day. I barely slept and was still in pain this morning. I am hoping to feel a lot better tomorrow.

So i missed half a Thursday and a whole Tuesday. In my last job i worked for 6 months without a sick day but I can't help but think it puts me in bad standing with my new job. I think if attendance drops below 95% they ask questions and if it is regular days i.e 3 Mondays over the space of several weeks then they assume something fishy.

What do you guys think?

Seems like you just don't want to work.

LOL

OP - well it certainly doesn't look good if you've just started the job. However, if you don't lose another day for the next few months then it will probably be forgotten. I've had similar things happen (a double-whammy) and then not lose another day for literally years........just how it goes sometimes.

I would just make sure you don't miss any more time for a while - even if you have to drag yourself from your deathbed!

Not a good start but these things happen. Been in my current job for over 7 years and had excellent sick record up untill last year where I had 6 occasions in a year which they pulled me up on, all were genuine including tonsilitis 3 times, just the way it goes sometimes. Thankfully we get full sick pay for up to 6 months :)

If you're ill, you're ill. I generally have two to four sickness periods off during any one year, I'd say it's about average and hardly lamentable. Some folks I work with have what I'd consider to be a ludicrous amount of time off work due to illness - one girl was off for twelve separate periods last tax year, normally two or three days at a time.

As you've just started I'd say you should go no matter how bad you feel & if your Manager sends you home then Sweet, Otherwise grin & bare it or be deemed a fagot/Dosser/skiva in my book.

I don't really get how some people can have loads of sick days yet others hardly any or none at all. Is it really that random or is there something about those who take sickies quite a lot...

7 years, no sick days :D

I've gone in work feeling like death warmed up, people are just sissy's/lazy a lot of the time. Obviously there are your REAL cases for being off ill but I reckon 90% people could go in if they really wanted.

was the same at school. there was always that '1 kid in class' who was constantly 'ill' have about 4 days off a month on average. it's called 'mummy's little weakling syndrome'.

I have only ever taken sick days once, I had flu (not a cold) actual flu, I couldn't move for a few days,

If you only need 1 day off work then it probably isn't bad enough to warrant a day off

There's times I could have gone in whilst being sick if I really really wanted but then I'd just get sent home as they dont want you there if you are ill, cant work properly and may pass anything on.

When I was young, I'd wake up with a gangrenous leg, rip it off with my bare hands, eat it for breakfast and then hop to work, 15 miles uphill in the snow.

Luxury.

Not had a sick day off in my last three jobs (and I put it on my CV as I think it's a damn good point) last three jobs - hmmm... must be 10 years+. I have had time off before that when I used to get tonsilitis really badly but that stopped.

I've been quite lucky (I had food poisining on a Friday night for example but recovered on the Sunday) and, touch wood, long may it continue.

I absolutely agree that there will be time when you need time off but I don't see it as a added holiday as most people do.

Thanks for the feedback. With regards to my first sickness if it was contagious which it wasn't but if it was I could have caused many people to become unwell. Its not always how you feel like flu for example. Some people get over it in a few days, some people die. Its not always on that person but the risk of infecting other people. The migraine obviously isn't contagious.
