Having said that MS desktop OS have traditionally been on a 3 year cycle (with the exception of Vista). The 3 year cycle combined with the beginnings of Win8 leaks and taking into account the IE10 preview and the previous IE9 release cycle puts a Win 8 release first half of 2012(ish).

There will not be a mainstream 128-bit CPU for many years yet. Maybe a decade or two.
 
Sorry but any body who thinks that Windows 8 will be released this July wants a sever poking with a cattle prod! (no offense). There is no Beta available for testing and certainly no RC version either so is it just going to magically appear? I think not (if it does happen then I will eat those words :P).

A good estimate (imho) would be the back end of 2012 around October time at the earliest. Windows 7 has been a huge success after the complete and total **** up that was Vista, there is nothing wrong really with Windows 7 and it is only just coming in to its own now with the recently released Service Pack 1, the customers are happy so why mess with that? They are in a position now where they can take their time and fully develop the next stage of Windows (I hear full touch screen support is on the cards though I have no idea if this is even remotely true).

I take it you've not noticed this thread started in January 2010 and was recently brought back from the dead?

I don't think anyone believes it will be released this year.

You missed out Windows 98SE, released in 1999. More stable then it's original counterpart and included a few more features.

I don't think it's likely to be, but it is on the cards. For the sheer fact is Microsoft can't entre the lucrative tablet Market place till windows 8 is out.
As it needs the arm CPU support, instant on/off, windows app store and other such things.

Is there a list of changes/add ons.

Hmm, I was kinda planning on holding out building a new PC til the beginning of next year so I could have Windows 8 on it but from the comments on here it looks like it won't be coming til towards the end of 2012 - I'm not sure I can hold out that long :P
