Can you kind guys explain wirless Ip cameras

Could I have camera connected to an old router in garage and then connect to that via pc in house?

It sounds like you've worked it out already, a wireless IP camera is one that connects straight to the network rather than going directly to a computer.

I'm assuming you want to use the extra router because your garage is out of range of your home wireless? I'm not sure if a router would work in that capacity, what you might need is a wireless access point. But networking isnt my strong point so lets hope someone else answers too. :p

Oh, and as you've posted this in GD, who are you going to be spying on, and is she hot?

Some routers will operate as access points. The issue is you will still need to wire the router back to the network unless it can operate in bridge mode and connect to another bridge in the house. For this your much better using a pair of decent access points, make sure they are capable of running in bridge and that they have detachable ariels so that you can replace them with high gain ones if the distance is to far to bridge.

Yes, the router can be anywhere as long as it’s within range of camera for signal.

You don’t need the PC on, just the router and a static IP address helps (well I find it’s better) but you can go down the Dynamic DNS route - which is easy and free.

You can then view the camera on any PC, in an internet cafe, at your mates, or on your mobile device over Wifi or 3G.

how would i go about recording footage? We have a local lout breaking into garages ans house at the moment I have my suspicions but need some proof.

A PC left running 24/7 with some kind of DVR software installed, you may get some basic software with the camera itself. You can also get dedicated hardware for recording, its usually quite expensive though.

Most Ip cameras will have an alarm record function. The cam will trip with movement and start recording or taking stills. It will then automatically upload this footage FTP to your internet server or local drive.

I do ‘homer’ jobs where I set this up for people in their homes or business. It’s a cam you can control and move (Pan and Tilt) there is also two way audio built in – you can listen and even talk to the person that’s breaking into your property. (People use it to commutate with their employees – or just listen in)

You can have nine cams on the system, all Wifi or hard wired.

I charge £129 all in, that’s the camera and all setup on your home network/router. Each additional camera thereafter costs £90. It’s a class system for a monitored burglar alarm with no running costs, as you already have the internet!

I also use it for streaming our gaming LANs live over the website. I live in London but would go back to Northern Ireland from time to time, so it’s great for security on my London apartment while I’m away.

what equipment do you use out of interest.

Rather than get an expensive external IP camera would an internal camera say like the

work if it was installed just inside a double glazed window looking out? Or would the screen glare mess it up I have secruity lights on PIR outside.

I reckon I could do what I want with 3 camera internal as long as they work thru a closed window, or do I need external cameras?

As long as the light was off within the room it’s housed, then it will work fine through double glazing. Of course you won’t be able to use the IR night vision through the window as it will reflect back and cause a rather large glare effect.

Or with the light on in the room and one sitting window side of the curtains or blinds, this would also work.

House has large eaves is it ok to use internal cam outside if it's unlikely to get wet?

maybe - moisture might get in, and other deleterious weather effects probably won't do it good.

you might be fine or it might die in a couple of days... best not to risk it really.
