6990+6970 tri-fire...

Quad fire is hit and miss mate. Don't wanna spend any more moula

The 6990 runs HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
100% fans and 100degC during my run of Heaven 2.5 then! Man alive

My current config has the 6970 right next to the 6990, the latter of which is in the top 16x slot.

I think I am going to move the 6990 to the bottom 8x slot, giving it more air. I'll then move the 6970 to the top slot and put the Xonar/GT440 in the middle. That should help with temps

Here are some pics

Side by side with a 6970

Should I just say I have read the manual? :)

Side by side in the case - you can see the 6990 on top. I am going to change that now
You can also see that the 6990 only has one crossfire bridge connector. I have always used two, but whether to it like marmite! Some say do, some say don't. Now I can only use one

You can see the temps and GPU usage for Heaven 2.5 (using AIDA 64 and G19). This was taken around 30 seconds in, well before I say temps of 100degC and the fan automatically went up to 100!

Toasty case after using those? 40+ degree in the case?

@ Gareth, do you have trouble running 3DMark11 with tri-fire? I get weird lines, even with stock clocks? I have reinstalled the software app itself with no joy!

so whats it like then badboy? have you got the performance you were expecting in games?

im yet to fully tweak my setup because of sandybridge issue and lack of space for my 3 28's, but thinking now that my 2 6950's arnt going to hack 5760x1200 that well

what kind of lines? does it appear on dark images?

can u take a screenshot?

Weird flickering. Very strange. Not even clocked!
Yeah, I'll try to take some. Might just be me

I am seeing lovely improvements mate. Heaven benchmark rose 45%, that's 90% compared with a single GPU. Excellent scaling. Drivers are temperamental in my favourite game, BC2. Sometimes its 40% GPU load across all three, sometimes 90%. But I think that's more BC2 than the cards.

The cards are hot - this weather doesn't help - so I have to ensure I put fans on when gaming. I wear a headset, so I don't mind a small rocket taking off under my desk

I think my CF 6970s were doing ok but just... not sure what fps you're getting mate

Nice review of CF 6990s vs 590s

if it's the slight scrolling bar flickering effect on dark images that im thinking of, i get it also on all games that as high fps.

even with 2 gpus in still same... i also got it with 2 6950..

i think everybody gets it when games run at high fps on dark images.

i think it's something to do with the brightness being slightly different when using cf. driver updates should fix this.

Go fot it, absolutely. Battlefield 3 maxed out in Eyefinity. It's gaming heaven.

Why not just go 6950 cf instead though? It's only money.

lol you wonder why your temps are so hot with that much space? ;)

you have to lol :D ever thought of watercooling?a complete watercooling kit and a 6970 plate is £200, and another £70 for the 6990 block, or stick some cardboard in between the cards or something because thats painfull! :D

I fitted the EK block to my 6990 makes the card silent and cool but cost was nearer £150 not £70 but even so well worth it for the silence.

I installed a small fan to blow at the front of my 6970 to help keep that cooler and it stops the gpu fan from spinning up because a 6970 on full flight can make a racket so i can imagine the noise levels from the 2 in that pic would be very loud and very hot.
