Just been playing BF2 for a bit of nostalgia and sadly I feel that it hasn't aged well at all. I didn't really enjoy any of the rounds I played today.
I remember it being a great game, maybe one of the best of all time, probably the one I've spent most time with of all games I've played, but by today's standards it just feels slow and clunky. Awkward even. The days of BF2 I feel are way behind us and I think rightly so. I reckon it had it's time and was amazing when it came out, but it just doesn't cut it these days.
There are too many annoying quirks to it. It's inconsistent; the hit-reg is so poor it's laughable; everyone dolphin dives, and people spam the comms constantly. I just found the whole experience extremely irritating really, which was a shame as I hoped to fall straight back into it.
I hope some aspects such as large maps, teamwork emphasis and decent vehicles are kept from BF2, but from going back to BF2 I hope that BF3 plays more like BC2 than BF2. *SHOCK HORROR* Okay, BC2 may have a more "arcadey" feel to it, but there's nothing realistic about BF2. The people who say it's "way more realistic than BC2" are just kidding themselves in my opinion.
Being good at BF2 was never about real life tactics etc. it was always about getting used to the little quirks of the game and getting the knack of dealing with the peculiarities in the engine. If you could do that, you could win rounds, unfortunately I got no satisfaction from that anymore when I played it again, it just seemed a bit weak and lacking in fun; which is what games are all about isn't it?
My most recent BF2 rounds for me were summed up by this:
Run round corner, confront enemy, both dive to prone and shoot each other in face. Random chance dictates who dies first. Repeat.
I used to love this, but it just doesn't cut it anymore.
