Hi. :)

I'm thinking of buying a new drive and am considering an SSD, or to a lesser extent, maybe a hybrid drive. I don't tend to visit this part of the forum much simply because I haven't needed to very often at all.

Is is advisable to research a bit about SSD's / Hybrids before purchasing? The odd thread I have browsed seems to suggest that there is more to consider than when just buying a HDD, e.g. things like Trim. New versions of SSD ect.

Thanks.

If you are using Windows 7 then an SSD is the best way forward if you want speed. However, if your using a different OS or speed is not the only factor i.e. storage then other options should be considered.

Thanks for the replies. :) I therefore take it I should just jump in and get one, no homework needing to be done before hand?

I am using Windows 7 and although the Velociraptor is far, far from slow, it will be nice to experience these lightning speeds I read about.

Btw - am I right there will be a newer version of SSD's soon? I'm sure I've read that somewhere on this forum.

The Vertex 3 and Intel 320's are the some of the latest generation drives but which is best for you depends on your motherboard. There is no point in buying the fastest drive unless your motherboard has a SATA III port. I'd do some research before buying so you don't end up wasting your money. :)

60 Gb or 120 Gb OCZ Agility drives.

Buy now, simples.

Just checked out the 120 gb that bhavv suggested. The price is good, I see it has TRIM support, and I see it has a SATA 2 interface so I assume (but nevertheless feel I should check) that the connection would be the same as what my Velociraptor uses? Compatible with an X48 mobo?

Yup. They are the best bang for buck SSDs atm on their current offer, theres no need to get faster ones over these as you will never be able to tell the difference.

RocketHybrid 1220 - make your own hybrid virtual drive with an SSD and HDD.

Mine just arrived. Will update when I get round to installing Win7

The difference between the vertex 2 and the agility drives are Max I/O Per Second (IOPS):

vertex has 60,000 and

Agility 50,000

What is max I/O do?
