Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

The ability to download any game from the PS Store and play on Dev servers has been around for about a week using CFW.

This is why PSN was shut down.

Lmao @ Sony tbh! A company of Sonys stature should have no problem fixing attacks like this within hours not days or maybe even weeks! Very poor imo!

My personal opinion is that they are going to do a big restructure of the system so that these attacks don't happen again as easily. Didn't someone mention before that they would have to take everything down to do that? If so I don't mind it being down a few more days if it slows the hackers down in future.

if this is the case, il be expecting a nice sized updated to download which will be fun.

Sony just add the service costs on to the price of their ps3 products, whether that's licensing fees for games, or ps1 games on the store or hardware/peripherals. It's just not a direct charge like live is.

Correct, but you also suggested that the PS3 comes with very little as standard and that the accessories are costly. Controllers aren't £50 and never have been.

 My mind has been blown

I for one am impressed by your detailed knowledge - you should go and propose some stealth taxes for air or something - just try and be as subtle as Sony are, no one would have guessed until you just pointed it out...

:p

PS3 users pay for it in the end anyway. Eg, composite cable in the ps3 box, £50 controllers.

It was said in jest :)

That said, a one-time charge isn't really going to keep the network running in a sustainable manner, and especially not with regard to security as we've all now learned the hard way. My friend can't even use his PSPgo at all because it's just so reliant on the PSN server being up and running.

If they tried the same thing (attacking the servers) to another hypothetical service where for example there is a monthly charge, it would be far less prone to crippling outages as I'd imagine the financial resources are there to keep it in firm shape and secure against any problems that may rise be it internal or external...

If your hypothesis is correct, I wonder why Xbox Live was down for so long then a few years back? I know it wasnt due to hackers, but it took a while to get it up (over a week IIRC) and running and thats as subscription service...

The ps3 does come with little as standard, the 360 controller costs £23 which is a lot less than the ps3 controller, regardless of the price semantics.

Sony can take as long as they like for all I care. If people can't live without online games for a few days then they must have issues!

I'd imagine Sony are taking their time in doing this to do a proper job, rather than patch it then have to take it down again when it gets attacked again.

People can moan and groan all they like, it's not going to change a thing, how about get out and enjoy some fresh air?
