Confrunted with 2 men in ski masks!

There is a new product coming to the market at the end of the year by a small US startup. It will allow you to track your car in real time on your computer or smart phone, give you its speed and allow you to kill the engine.

Sounds to me like a recipe for ending up in court if you cause an accident by remotely killing the engine :p

this will will kill the engine via the GSM network so range will not be a issue. You will also be able to SMS the car to kill the engine.

That is actually a simple but very smart system. I would definetly buy something like that, though i have a suzuki alto at the moment not worth putting in there.

I'll make my point again. You've got theft cover on your insurance. Why pay someone else to fit a system so that you can have your pride and joy back after it's been thrashed about and abused by a bunch of crooks. Let them have it, take your insurance payout, buy another.

Very valid point raised there. We had a car stolen a few times many years ago and it was never the same again. All I remember is that it had marks where they tried to remove parts of the interior in a rush but I'm sure there was more to it.

1 Generally most people other then car enthusiasts will want the car back.
2 if you have owned the car from new I would rather get the car back then buy a second hand car with the insurance payout.
3 save on loosing NCB
4 if you catch it early enough they would not have got very far with the car.

But the primary aim of the system that I am talking about it actually for fleet management and for "subprime" car leasing companies in the US.

Totally agree. There's no way I'd want my car back after thieves had driven it, and I believe that it stays on the car's record anyway doesn't it?

scenario 3

you get caught red handed because of it so get your mates to go smash the crap out of the guy or his car just because thats the sort of scum you are.

scenario 4

You don't take any precautions, leave them to take the car, claim on the insurance and get another car.

They know where you live and come back a few months later to try again because it was so easy last time ?

Theres no single solution.

How easy is it to disable a tracker? If it's obvious there is one could they not look for it and rip it out or force you to disable it? I think every way you look at it you lose if someone wants to steal your car.

Not easy, but do-able.

Easier option is to jam the tracker until you can get it to someone good enough at wiring/it's out the country.

Or I was just pre empting the kids who might rush in and say he should have grabbed his Katana and used secret Aikido techniques you need a special licence to know to kill the intruders.

Or you're just grabbing any chance you get to use that sad little saying.

there used to be gps jammers on ebay for about 50quid, just pop them into the cigar lighter socket and job done.:)

I'm sure a half decent thief can still source them easily.

It's not the gps you need to jam, that can be done for a couple of quids worth of parts, but the gsm and other radio signals it chucks out that enable it to be tracked in closer proximity. None of them are exactly hard though and pretty inexpensive.

Check out the cyber car theives, My cousins girlfriend got her car stolen
A year or two back, The police actually stopped the scum in it red handed. Got the car back. It ended up needing a engine rebuild along with other bits! Scum went to court didn't have to pay a penny in damages etc. I'd not want my car back either.

As per my post. Pete I'm totally with you on this. No one really wants to get it back after its bounced off the kerb at 90.

My worry with these tracker or blackjaxx systems is you lot forget they know where you live. Coming back to give me a kicking or raping your partner or scaring the hell out of your kids....

No matter the car... no thanks

i'll make my point again.

Yes they know where you live, so whats to stop them coming back and taking it again after you've replaced it ?

it was easy the first time, why not do it again ? It's happened to somebody on the VXR forums.

nothings stopping them. but all the other options are as bad as each other.

What's to stop them coming back and demanding the code next time?

Would you rather them keep stealing the car without disturbing you or putting your family in harms way?

where does it end though ?

2 times ?

3 times ?

what happens if next time they start stealing from the house as well ?

what if they get tempted to come upstairs this time ?

Difficult one to answer

as ultimately nothing suggested here does that.

Other than moving to a better area, and getting a large garage to hide all the cars.

Has anyone had their car stolen and go through the insurance process? I know someone who I used to work with who had his and his wife's cars stolen at night. It took months for insurers to pay out but luckily they had enough money saved up to go out and buy two more cars. If that happened to me I would be stuck without a car until the insurers paid out.

You'd eventually get the money to pay for a new car but for the several months between you're stuffed even though you've been paying hundreds/thousand for car insurance. You just can't seem to win either way.
