Idiots break into van... full of SAS. Fail!

"They were trying their luck on every van in the estate, looking for tools they could pinch"

So basically the SAS... would have let them get away with theft from the other vans if they had missed theirs?
Hmm, anybody checked Snopes?
I wasn't aware the SAS were sworn in as constables....

As far as I'm aware even on a training op they aren't allowed to break cover without permission from up the chain unless there is an immediate danger to life - tho I'd be very suprised if it wasn't bounced up the chain and reported to local law enforcement.

I'm suspicious of the story tho as I've heard something very very similiar about an MI5 stakeout a few years ago (and that ones probably not true either as MI5 tend to use more every day unarmed "part timers" for general stakeout rather than armed field trained agents).

Reminds me of worlds dumbest criminals, some guy tries to throw a petrol bomb through a shop window and it bounced of the window and he set fire to himself.

quality :)

Don't believe the SAS would just sit there while the teenagers tried to take off with a vehicle, probably a made up story.

They didnt, they were nicking tools, multi thousand/million £££ SAS wargame or a few tools that insurance would cover ? Its only when the security of the game and themselves was breached they gave them a slap

Since when was justice about value for money? £1 million or £1 it's still theft, not to mention what else they could have been getting up to that night. The story says they didn't even report it to the police.

The whole purpose of these exercises is not to react to anything unless its part of the brief.

Say this was a real exercise and they were monitoring some terrorists. What do you think is going to happen if the police turn up with sirens and lights? The terrorists would immediately pack up and abandon plans for quite some time - intelligence would be lost and a potential cell alerted - for the sake of a couple of quids worth of tools? Even if the cost ran into the tens of thousands it is still not worth blowing cover for.

Common sense should tell you as much.

Well to be fair, the story actually says they didn't report it to the police using 'official channels' because SAS identities would need to be compromised by giving evidence. That suggests that reports were passed on, but 'unofficially'...

I agree the Sun is a daft rag, and the pictures are lol-worthy. I just found the story itself amusing, and had it been reported in the Telegraph or similar I'd have much preferred to source them instead; alas it wasn't.

But there are no terrorists, it's an exercise so all that is irrelevant. What kind of fools do a training exercise in crime central at midnight anyway? God knows how many thousands of pounds worth of equipment was stolen by them.

Best ring Hereford and tell them they're doing it wrong. :p Provided the story is as recounted, I'm sure they had their reasons - and the likes of thee n me are unlikely to understand them tbh.

the kind of crazy fools who have to do this kind of real operation in crime central at midnight?
