Idiots break into van... full of SAS. Fail!

since when were the military the civilian police?

You don't need to be a police officer to arrest someone, they had the capability and the responsibility to do it and they didn't act. They could well have gone on to commit much more serious crimes that night like murdering someone who tried to stop them stealing from their car.

Say this was a real exercise and they were monitoring some terrorists. What do you think is going to happen if the police turn up with sirens and lights?

Not as though I think there is any truth in the OPs story but in real life when would the SAS get involved?
What if a woman was being raped yards from the van would they still turn a blind eye?
In the made up scenario it was an exercise so not important.

No they had the capability but not the responsibility top act.

lol.

I imagine the point at which a human being was in danger rather than a bunch of tools? (during training, in a real exercise though i suppose only when they were directly compromised)

Not really, the point of the exercise is to prepare them for the reality.

it's quite possible that in a real situation they may well have to stay concealed and not act while there is a crime or even an assault going on, because their operation is more important.

that's something they have to learn to deal with in training.

They had the same responsibility that every citizen has to stop crime, more so as public employees.

No citizen has the responsibility to put themselves in harms way, in fact you'll find it's normally discouraged as you simply add another casualty most of the time.

many may feel the duty to but it is not a requirement.

You could concede more eloquently.

not really you're just adding in made up stuff to try and give you a better argument.

the blokes where prying open the rear doors of vans not trying to steal cars, the odds of them being murders is pretty low isn't it.

perhaps all speeders should be arrested on the spot and banned from driving for life as after they've been given a ticket they could drive off and speed into a a school crossing on bring your puppy to school day, leaving a trail of children's corpses and mourning puppies strewn across the street.

They're on an exercise, which means they do it by the book. Someone coming along stealing tools could have happened if they'd been on a real mission. They performed the job right up until their cover was blown. Who knows how long they'd been in that van. Probably days spent ****ing and ****ting into bags and sleeping on it's floor.

I'm sorry but lol... :D Tefal I <3 you sometimes.

They didn't need to. They could have just called the police and said "can you send a couple of officers down there, thanks".

It's a definite liability given the number of thefts and robberies that end up with death or injury.

What a load of rubbish.
Don't believe the story for one minute & think the whole lot was fabricated.

Seriously - do people believe the SAS would be on a stakeout int he middle of a Manchester council estate, not report the incident and just give them "a bit of a slap".

As usual there is no way of disproving or proving it. So if you really think it's true then fair enough.

To everybody who is saying "it was just an exercise" this is the SAS we are talking about, the people who use live rounds even in training, so I suspect they do take exercises quite seriously.

Was a funny read even if there is a decent chance it was made up...

Yep sounds perfectly feasible to me. Sounds like the place you might find some militant types and you practice somewhere similar to where the real op will take place. Possible practice for a NI operation? If I was them I certainly wouldn't report it and I'd be surprised if the would be thieves would report it which does make you wonder how the Sun got hold of it...regardless of that the details sound possible regardless of how unlikely...

I will add I don't read the papers or watch the news a lot these days, mostly doom and gloom and negative. Oh and as has been pointed out you never know how much you can believe!

no, they couldn't. that would have been a breach of operational parameters, and the exercise would have ended, and they'd have gotten a considerable bollocking.
