Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Really struggling to understand the anger over this. SONY have hardly taken the service down for a laugh, it was obviously broken and/or compromised by someone or something. I fail to see why people are throwing their SONY toys out of the pram.

I think most people just want a time frame when it will be fixed. Days/Weeks? Sony must know the answer to that, even a ballpark figure would be good at this point, rather than withholding that information.

A lot of games are heavily online based, I am sure people do not want to buy them without an indication when the online function will work. A good example is Portal 2, big-ish release from last week that heavily relies on online. Would you buy this today without knowing when you could play online or activate steam features etc, or wait till a time frame is given and then buy it (considering new games drop in price in a couple of weeks).

Personally, I would have held off on getting MK8 last week, if I had known the online would be down (although to be fair it was up when I got the game on Wednesday, but then went down). I was umming and ahhing about Portal 2 and the fact PSN is offline has put me off buying it till it is fixed etc

Which is fair enough, don't get me wrong, I'd like it back on, but the way some people are being over it is a little over the top.

Im the same - Ive shelved picking up Portal 2 until this is over - to me the bonus is to have it on the PS3, but its more 'essential' for it to be on my PC/Mac. I did get Castlevania over the weekend, but it being a SP game did cross my mind before I bought it...

I know PSN will be back soon, but it doesnt appear Id put my own money on it by investing in predominantly online games...

I was the same, but bought it anyway :) thought i might start SP anyway to get a trophy or two before linking and playing it on PC. BTW it gives you a good reason to get through all the games you have bought and never played! :p

Surely it's becoming a little too late to just wing it and hope things come back? Maybe they are worried that if they put a time frame down a large base of people will go to 360, or maybe they have no clue about where the problem is, or even how to fix it yet? If all our data (card details, account information) was deleted/corrupted, that will also take them forever to restore.

"Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. wow and i thought i got a bargain, if they were £18 i would have bought as many as i could and ebayed them.

Yeah it was the Sony Style offer. So many people, myself included still ordered them even though the website said out of stock, but Sony still obliged with the backlog orders.

Full text (for those who can't get to site)

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer,

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity passwords and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please check www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.
