Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Can't even remember what my PSN password is, or what card details I had stored on it were... and can't check as the PSN is down.

If you search your emails for messages received from: [email protected] this will tell you the first four and last four digits of your card used. The title of the mail will be PlayStation(R)Network Wallet Funding.

With regards to Sony having a poor response, I don't really think it's that bad.

As soon as they found out, they shut it down. They left everything dormant then called in an outside computer security / forensics team to investigate. After a proper investigation had been performed and they had empirical evidence, they announced their findings.

They were responsible to their customers by stopping service instantly and eating the PR hit. They were responsible to shareholders by doing a proper investigation before announcing anything publicly.

I'm gutted I can't play online but I don't think they've acted improper, yet.

They were supposed to be responsible to their customers and tell them that our details have been leaked and to watch for activity on our cc's. This should have been done straight away not 6 days later.

Absolutely. I always thought that it was a legal obligation to instantly inform customers of possible personal data leaks, especially so when financial data is involved. Is anyone here savvy on the laws regarding this? Does it have to be instant or can it be within xxx amount of days?

Oh man, that's not good - front page tabloid news; sure, it's the Sun but how long until it's front page on more reputable publications? Although a LOT of people read the Sun.
They're going to need Harry Houdini to get out of this one with reputation intact.
I'm actually starting to wonder if this will destroy Sony's gaming business.
Just a couple of months after I'd traded my Xbox for a PS3 too

There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion 19th April and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly yesterday evening.

Seems fair enough to me.

On a side note, if they catch who did this, will they get charged with however million cases of individual theft/fraud, or is there some banner crime they would be charged under?

You assume they knew there was a data leak on day one.
To be fair, I said possibility of personal information being leaked. On day one, there was a possibility. Wasn't there?
Even after 6 days they haven't said one way or the other with a clear statement. I'm just relieved that I always buy PSN cards so at least my CC info can't be stolen but people who's can be stolen must be very worried and Sony are doing nothing to stop those worries.

In all fairness, if people are concerned they would be much better off contacting their credit card company/bank instead of expecting Sony to do it for them. I only had to tell my CC company it was the card linked to my PS3 account and they cancelled it, ordered me a new one and quickly ran through my recent purchases - they were totally clued up on what was happening.

Cards can be terminated for new ones, money lost through identity theft can be recovered.

My cards details will have been on PSN, I'm not worried, but I'm annoyed such a big companies security was so shockingly bad.

Peoples minds are changing now "I'm not paying to play online with Xbox 360 when its free on the PS3" With this credit card issue arising just shows you pay for quality and security when paying for Xbox Live.

I was wondering when someone would use this as an "advantage" for the Xbox. I personally wouldn't have the balls to use Microsoft as my holy grail for computer security :P

I only just got the email through from sony this morning at 3am. It's only on my US account though which I have for demos so any information on that account is false.

Haven't received the email for my UK account which seems pretty bad as this problem clearly effects accounts worldwide. I'm a bit more worried about that one as I do use it for purchasing.

The crazy thing is aside from changing our password there is nothing we can do if they have our card details now and decided to publish them or use them!? Really not good on Sony's part!
