Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Hmm I linked my psn to my steam account for portal 2, would steam be under threat aswell in that regard? I've never bought anything via PSN but have done with steam so bit concerned they can get in that way. Mind you I use a CC for steam so atleast thats a bit of protection.

Cheers, didnt know that, the ICO site itself still hasnt got any news on it :/

I cant see Sony getting anything but a slap on the hand really, its one thing not securing your product well, but entirely another when it comes to CC details or personal information as there are standards/controls to adhere to and (regular) audits to perform, so I cant see their security being below par.

I also cant see anything happening about their conduct post-awareness of the breach - at a gross level them seem to have followed any guidelines out there:

http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_organisations/data_protection/lose.aspx

Not sure how protected people are for personal data outside of the EU though...

EDIT: Reading that quoted link, just makes me think Im being naive in assuming someone like Sony would do the minimum, its not exactly hard to form a good information policy and adhere to it  - its like they still think its the 80s or something...

ps3ud0

I can't decide whether to cancel my card or not. I have a second account I could use for the time being but what with this weekend being a bank holiday, I imagine I wouldn't get my new card until at least the end of next week and that's a real hassle considering pretty much all transactions in and out go through my PSN-linked bank account.

I can't for the life of me remember what password I used for PSN either, or how many other sites I might use the same password for :(

I'd be surprised if we don't hear about a class-action lawsuit at some point...

i seriously doubt that psn didnt have the adequate security needed to meet internet standards. therefore the only people who can have a legit lawsuit against them would be the hackers.

sony are losing money every day psn is down, from sales as well as expenses on getting it back up and running, this whole saga could end up costing them many millions, especially if people start jumping ship.

From what I have read (could be just idle rumour) but the reason you might not have had any email, is Sony could've lost ALL user information in the process!

Meaning they do not have your details to contact you!

Massive problem if true.

Just a shame I cannot change my password for PSN (gladly it's not the same password as my email address for my PSN account).

Surely not, if hackers deleted the PSN database then PSN has literally been destroyed and you wouldn't even have an account anymore! o_o

Sony said:
If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, it is possible that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

But without the security code you can't really use that other info, or can you? And how could the hackers get all that other info and not the security code. Is it not stored or something?

they didnt and if they did there is something known as backups

As above, even if they did one would assume Sony have backups of everything.

If they are restoring it from a backup, no wonder it's taking ages, I'd hate to think how much data 77 million users generates.

doubt it would be that much tbh, its not as if they have our whole life stories on there, its just mainly names and addresses.

That's what I was wondering as well.

I kind of assumed it wasn't store and only used to verify your card details with the bank at the time of purchase. Just a wild guess on my part though and I've been wrong many times before. :D

Does anyone know how you go about DELETING old accounts that are no longer in use? I have several Xbox gamertags/PSN IDs that I never bother with now and rather than have my personal details hanging around, I want all trace of them removed. Never heard of anyone deleting an account before though.

Or should I just log in and change all my details to false ones?

Probably easier changing them into false ones as you don't really know if it's being deleted a 100% Plus all your real details are probably already archived ready for hackers to find and abuse :p

This is all a bit of a fiasco isn't it? Looks like the power of Sony and their fans will keep them a float and PSN healthy as for investors, shares and such maybe not so much :p Bring on E3 bet they won't be touting "we have over 80 MILLION PSN USERS!!!".
