The Pub and Drinks

Image means more to you than having your own choice then?

Yep, for the sake of £1.50 (that's going to someone whos pub I'm sitting in) it is. It's not as if it's unreasonable to expect to pay to sit in someones cleaned, staffed and heated pub that they have to pay rent on is it?

But as a group you are paying. If 3 people sit at a table for 4, no 4th random person is going to sit there. So what difference is a 4th person who is drinking water?
The pub is not losing money in any way what so ever.

Exactly, the only way they would lose money is if they did what they did!
Stupid manager with shocking business sense and logic.

Its a bit of a grey area. Its not like you'd be breaking any laws or anything, but people could argue that if your taking up space in a pub, you should spend something, no matter how small the amount.

I suppose its like two people going into a resteraunt together and only one person eating, while the other person just sat there. I'm sure the restertaunt wouldnt toss you out, especially as the one not eating could be the one paying the bill, but I would still feel kinda weird sitting there not eating anything if it was me. I'd be inclined to order a small snack or beverege, even if I didnt really want one.

they could argue that but the pub in question had very few customers as it was, for the sake of one person not buying a drink they lost out on the revenue from 3 that were buying, bit silly imo but hey ho, their pub, their rules

I usually just get a pint of blackcurrant cordial and soda water, refreshing :) some places charge a ridiculous amount for just that though.

Not to be an argumentative git, but that's happened with me before. :)

I don't really see what is wrong with only giving service to non paying customers. Hence why you see many signs saying "toilets for customers only". If it was my pub, and there were 4 pals - 3 of which were drinking then I would welcome them. However, I don't see much of an issue with refusing to provide services to someone who is not contributing anything.

Goodness grief, when I read posts like thing I worry. It flies in the face of common sense so much that I can't see how any rational person can support the actions of the pub worker in the OP.

If you're with a group of mates then any pub worker with the slightest iota of sense would ignore the water thing and let oyu all drink. Where's the profit in turfing out a group of people where 90% are drinking? Stupid, stupid decision by any standards.

This makes no sense and therefore there *must* be another side to the story.

Unless you were causing irritation in some other way then I just cannot see how this would ever happen. On your own sat there just drinking water in a pub just busy enough that there was no more seating, perhaps but as a group of people? Nah, not buying it.

Why does it have to make sense?

A group of about 10 I was with were threatend to be thrown out of a very quiet Yates because one of the guys who was driving was having a nap before we set off home, we couldn't believe the manager would rather lose 9 customers than let our driver (who had bought a drink) have some shut eye, it wasn't like we were putting off any potential customers as we were sat away in a corner and you could only see the lad sleeping if you walked right upto the table.

Sleeping, perhaps. Could be a multitude of reasons for that.

Sat there just drinking water is a different story.

Maybe the barman thought your mate was drunk? Either way your mate shouldn't of been driving if he was that tired anyway.

Yeah but you can imagine how it feels, to be honest, if I see someone sleeping/eyes shut in a bar, the first thing that's going to come to my mind is not "Oh he must be driving", it's: that guy is a **** head or is on drugs. It may look bad for the establishment.

I can't say for certain what the manager thought but I didn't get the impression he assumed my mate was drunk, his words were along the lines of 'can you wake him up or i'll have to ask you to leave' , infact no one was drunk or trying to get drunk, we were having some food and a drink on our way back home, the driver was fine, he just wanted a nap to refresh

maybe, I would just simply see it as someone having a nap though, unless they were with a rowdy bunch who were obviously drunk or there was something else to lead me to suspect they had too much pop
