Firefox 4.0.1

Cheers, just installed this. But where's the changelog??

10 seconds on Google produces these release notes. :) {Edit: Beaten. :o That'll teach me to rant instead of posting fast 'n' clear lol}

I must admit I've been a Firefox fan since it first released. But I'm finding more and more use for Safari now (on my MBP, I don't like the Windows port so much). At least Safari passes Acid3 100%, whereas Firefox and IE9 don't, and Safari plays much nicer with HTML5 etc in my experience. :(

I'll probably stick to Firefox for my main browser still, as it has touches that Safari doesn't (address bar doubling as a search bar, three finger swipe on the trackpad for page top and page bottom etc). However I do wish Firefox had managed to pass Acid3 with v4; if Apple can do it anyone can.

That said I'm not just posting to bash Firefox. As I said I've been using it since the year dot and continue to do so. I just hope they can continue to improve (4 is far, far better than 3!) and not get misdirected in the race for the next version.

What is horrible about it?

It's faster, it's more supported, it's better looking (although you can apply the 3.6 theme if you like...).

status bar at the bottom is gone? only way to get it back is with an addon , home button is moved right to the other side of the screen, the top of the browser apeared larger than in 3.6 meaning about half an inch of screen was made useless.

didnt seem as fast either which ive seen other people comment on elsewhere

IE9 and Chrome follow this trend, it's nothing new to FF. Status popups are cleaner anyway but the option to show the bar is there via ctrl+/ or just install a quick and simple addon to auto show it on hover or permanently inline with status like 3.6. This is Firefox, if you don't like something, just customise it.

Simply move it back to the left. Again, this is Firefox, you can move UI items wherever you want (within reason).

Not entirely, stock FF4 is better implemented than stock 3.6. You can have it as minimal as you like as well.

Sounds to me it's more a case of you not being a fan of the changes Mozilla have put into FF4. Or, at least, not giving yourself some time to figure it all out.

The changes are not sudden either, BETA and RCs have been out for months so everyone has had a lot of time to get acquainted with the new layout.

The buttons can be moved about. Right click at the top, select customize and move them to whatever order you want.

edit, beaten like a ginger step child :)

I wouldn't see too much in to not being 100% acid3 compatible. It is rumoured that some browsers simply optimise for the benchmark rather than the underlining technology!

I've been a Firefox user since the beta days but I must say i'm getting pretty tired of the way it seems to poorly manage memory.

As an example, if i go into the high-res screenshot thread, it quite often grinds to a halt and uses 650MB+ of RAM. (This was on a clean install, no add-ons either).

What spec is your system?

Neither on my old system or my new upgrade does it slow or use that much RAM when browsing the high res screenshot thread and I have the forum set to 80 posts per page.

Old:
Q9550 4GHz
8GB DDR2

New:
i5 2500K 4.5GHz
8GB DDR3

FF4 RAM usage with 4 tabs open, one of which is high res screenshot (last page): 492MB.

I'm on a E5200 (2.5 GHz) / 2GB RAM. With just facebook/twitter and this page open, it's idling at about 260MB... which is about normal i'm guessing?

Hmm with only 2GB RAM the problem lies here unfortunately especially when doing memory hungry tasks.
