Maybe my GCSE maths got left a bit behind once I got to uni...

At the end of the day, none of the post-GCSE maths I have done has suffered because of this sort of nonsense, so I'm not bothered if I'd drop a mark on a GCSE paper.

And this is what it ultimately boils down to lol.

I won't see this again, and so I don't really care.

Want to say I'm bad at maths for thinking it's 1? Go for it, I don't care.

x²=9

What is x?

Fall into the trap.

hahaha.

z^3 = 1
what is z?

It is amusing either way that a KS3 level question has gained such a response so quickly :D

Wow... I'm not going to bother explaining very basic maths over and over again to people just being arrogant and wrong.

It's either 1, or the question is too vague to determine between 1 or 9 depending on your point of view.

At a GCSE level of pure maths, it is 1.

You have added in an extra '*' there.

Excel states the formula is incorrect and autocorrects it.
Apple Numbers just stated that the formula was incorrect.

Both return the corrected formula answer as 9.

The only conclusion is the question is purposely ambiguous to give lively discussions such as these....

You kiddin' right?

The reason why many of us have said one - we have interpretted the divide sign to mean all after it is the denominator.

But what I wrote was totally silly in that it doesn't at all explain the point I wanted to make :p

Obviously you don't need a multiplication sign there for there to be a multiplication, but how you visualise it does effect how you answer it.

You lot remind me of the people of South Park outside the town hall shouting "rabble, rabble rabble!"

This question was a test of whether or not people will give a strong opinion and argue to the death about one choice "being right" when presented with two equally valid solutions to an ambiguous question. Most of you failed.

I'm not seeing lots of dead people?
