What the hell went wrong! :(

I've lost over a stone since xmas and have continued to improve in strength :)

If you want something to work towards if you aren't a frequent gym-goer, try working towards 5 hanging pull ups like these:

They are really hard!

Couldn't even do one chin-up in september, and last time I tried I could do 4 hanging pull ups, so I think that's some good progress. Sadly, it can absolutely wreck your wrists / forearms if you are a wuss like me - I'm having to rest up :(

The difficulty there is finding a free-standing (?) bar somewhere to do them.

I don't think my curtain rail is going to be strong enough :p

I've been dieting for a week (I've just stopped eating McDonalds) and I lost 4 stone and now have a massively ripped set of abs :)

Sorry, but I'm slightly dubious as to how fast some of you are claiming to have lost weight. You can lose several pounds of fat a week if you have an absolutely insane and very calculated diet of very specific foods. Unless you have stuck to that (which I'm betting people haven't) then your weight loss is either due to natural fluctuation or you have simultaneously lost a relatively large proportion of lean mass.

I'm not sure if it's so much about losing weight, but rather that they're carrying less food around all the time. It's normal to see a spike at the start of a healthy diet change. Combine that with a bit of temporary motivation to excercise, it's easy to see how you can quickly lose weight initially, but progress flattens out.

Surely it depends on the start weight? Some of us started at over 20st, big people always see a much larger weight loss at the start, then it slows down to the normal 1-3lb per week.

Both of these points are valid!

Was about 120-125kg about 3 years ago, always reasonably fit for my size playing prop forward for 6 years and Defensive lineman (American Football) for 5. Decided to get into shape. Dropped down to 100-105 which i have maintained for the last year. Decided 5 weeks ago to get in PROPER shape for summer, and started a strict programme. Lost a kilo a week since starting, and aiming for 90kg by the time i finish. Starting to see a lot of definition, and should even have sign of abs (and not just a solid looking belly) by the time i finish.

pull-ups are great - I'm up to about 5 palm forward now - and about 8 afterwards palm backward (easier) - in fact one of my main routines in gym - is 5 palm forward, 8 palm backward, followed by 3-4 reps of max weight benchpress - then repeat it all - 4-5 times

my weight loss ?

height 5'4

March 2010 - 13 stone 8 ish - BMI - obese - trouser size 38

April 2011 - 9 stone 9 - BMI- normal - trouser size 28

no real diet - just cut out coke, crisps, chocolate etc- and exercised LOTS and LOTs - gym - 5 times a week minimum - sometimes 6 - used to be a split routing - 65% running and about 35% of time doing weights

now I do all my running outside (training for a 10 mile race in 3 weeks time) - so do 3 long-ish runs a week (14-16k a piece), and then 4-5 gym sessions on top - onl weights now in the gym - for about 1hr or so

my 10 mile time down to about 1hr 22 mins now

and in March 2010 - I was out of breath running up 2 flights of stairs

also resting heart rate has dropped dramatically - its down to 41 now !!

I seem to be down from 17.9 in January to around 17.4 when I weighed myself last week, but I only really made a start on getting round to exercising and eating 'properly' about a fortnight ago, despite my intentions to start earlier. Thing is, to my eye, I look bigger rather than smaller (as in, my belly appears to be protruding more in comparison to my chest than previously) but I imagine that's just fat disappearing from one area before the other?

Was kind of demotivating, at least until someone commented that I did appear to be losing weight.

Very encouraging to see the results people in here are getting. Some are absolutely amazing. :)

Keep up the great work, Best of luck with your run

In 2007 I had been kicking around 24st for about 8 years after piling it on in Uni (although I was always big). Approaching my 30th birthday I decided I had to do something about my weight. So I put myself on a low calories diet (about 1200 cals a day) and bought a rowing machine and exercise bike which I did religiously for 45min-1hr each day after work.
Got very rapid results and was averaging just under a stone lost per month, so after 8 months I was down to 17st. At that point I upped the calories a bit, joined a gym and over the following 4 months gradually got down to 15 stone.

After that I gained a lot:
1. Self confidence to go out and get a better job
2. Joined match.com found myself a great girl - who is now my wife
3. Moved out of parents home
4. In Aug 2010 birth of my son!

Anyway this is the 2011 weight loss story, and I did put a bit of weight on at the end of 2010, due to really enjoying christmas too much and spending more time with the baby and less time training.
So at start of this year I was back up to 16st 6lb. Have since started doing more exercise again and eating better and now back down to 14st 7lb as of today - which I would like to make my new top weight from now on. Ideally I want to take it steady and get down to 13st by around September and then to build back up to 14st ish with weight training over the autumn/winter months.
