Lexus IS 200 owners

You'd just be in a different gear when you get destroyed by a 318i.

Also VVT *should* make a car which can produce good power but manage good fuel economy if you go easy. It's one of the reasons Fox's 230bhp 530i can beat 30mpg sometimes.

So gear ratios have no effect on performance?

Yes, I am entirely clueless regarding transmissions - any articles around that would explain it?

No, the change you described would have a very small impact on acceleration from speed, possibly slowing the IS down.

If you want to know about gear ratios go and study Automotive Engineering and look at lots of graphs.

The things your father is saying are just attempts to play down his car's shoddy performance.

Performance wasn't why he bought it :p

He's well aware of it's comparative lack and has on several occasions talked about supercharging it - 205bhp should make it a bit better, but dropping £5k on a car that's now only worth £2 is pointless.

Going to study chemistry, but nonetheless am very interested in cars - would appreciate a breakdown if that's not too an unreasonable request :)

Didn't they do a JDM version (Aristo?) with the 3L S6 TT engine from the Supra in it?

No, this car is an Altezza in Japan and comes in 2 models both with 2l engines. RS200 with 3s-ge dual beams, a 210ps@7600rpm 4pot screamer with standard LSD, and the AS200 with the 6pot 1G-fe like the IS200 has, optional LSD.

Ah. I was thinking of the GS300. My bad.

I was going to say that even my car is faster than the is200 :p I suppose the longer gearing helps.
