Its not a persecuted muslims angle.
Its a persecuted populations angle.
They just happen to be muslim.
Persecuted populations will eventually grasp at the ones who offer hope, no matter how bad they may seem, communists in russia, biggest example, they offered the people persecuted by the russian elite of the time an alternative that was taken.
On the muslim front Osama offered to unite muslim people against the west who propped up bad government in the middle east, its like a maniacs rule of thumb, find a cause the common man will follow blindly and wait for the sheep to come to your door.
Did not work on the same scale as communism but drew in enough disenchanted people to cause a lot of damage on a global front.
I disagree with this currently.
The only people in the world blowing up mosques at the moment are jihadii groups and extreme muslim sects, they do it in the name of Islam, and to strike fear into those who wish to be moderate.
They are also the only people in the world burning down Christian churches and preventing people from practicing their own faiths.
When you are completely on your own on a world stage, look around, there's probably something wrong with your own policy, not everyone else.
