massive? Thing have been quite the opposite, it's just the media attention.
I wish people would stop thinking things haven't been worse, this crap happens
all the time, as long as history has been recorded you can see events in the geological, biological and social conflict have been making it a hell for people and then some, before we learned to read and write, or communicate, before we roamed the planet.
It's not always about the numbers, how many, when, how close to each other it happens, it just does.
