Golf GTI DSG, thoughts?

i have a 7 speed dsg in my vw golf 1.4tsi, i think its quite brilliant, dont feel a gear change, its also a triptronic box in mine as well (manual and auto) with a sports mode that tends to eat the juice, but makes you grin

Actually the MK5 Golf GTI needs its cambelt replacing at 40k or 4 years! Mine was done at 40k now will be done at 80k (soon!).

The DSG paddles were introduced for free on all DSG cars that were built in July 05 onwards, i.e. the 2006 model. Prior to that the paddles were only part of the MF steering wheel which was an extra £550! My car, 05 plate was the first 2006 model to arrive at this particular dealership, it would have had free paddles had I specced DSG - doh I should have!!

The way to tell is if it has aluminium interior trimmings then it is a 2006 model year if not then it is 2005. Hope that helps.

Just checked the service schedule and your quite right it's actually 60k for the cambelt and then 120k :) spark plugs at 60k or 4 years whichever comes first.

Also I think the DSG needs servicing every 40k miles.

I think there is some sort of control module that's the weak link rather than the actual box mechanicals. £1000+ to replace

I believe it's around £2k if you get it done at a dealer. However there are third party companies that will fix the mechatronic unit for around £300 (as mentioned above)... but you still have to pay someone to remove it and to re-fit it, which can still be fairly costly.

The unit then also then needs to be taught as they are adaptive. The 1st thing dealers do is reset the module and see if that helps. If it doesnt, then they replace the mechatronic unit. This isnt a small job.

Last i heard, there was a high portion of DSG/S-Tronic's failing within 6,000miles or just after the warranty expired.

IF it fails, then the car is not worth driving and the longer you drive the car, the worse the symptons get!

And another thing.....The issues do not start until the car is warm. On cold starts the cars drive fine.

Just google "DSG kangarooing" or "DSG jerking" or "Jerky DSG" to get you started...

Everyone sensible will extend the warranty anyway.

Clearly I must be one of the not so sensible ones then!

Had my Mk5 GTi from brand new (07/05) (73k now) and I am glad I did not extend the warranty. The most expensive thing to go wrong apart from usual consumables tyres, pads, servicing etc has been the electronic fuel pump controller relay (cost me £89) and that happened last month. Apart from that it has been rock solid reliable. My sister has a DSG on hers (06/05) and it has been serviced at 40k, no problems there either.

So yeah every sensible person who wants to waste money on an extended warranty please carry on!

Wouldnt have quiet been so cheap if the DSG had gone wrong though would it...?
