i have had 3 phonecalls from a indian guy telling me that my ip keeps telling their system that i have a virus, he claimed that its because of a high amount of tiny downloads and uploads

i asked the guy what service provider he was calling from and he told me that he is from a indipendant company who monitor internet traffic in my area

the first time he called i just put the phone down because he wanted me to go to my pc to run some spyware tests, as i keep my pc fairly clean i couldnt be bothered and he phoned quite late

2nd time i told him i was busy and the third time i told him i was a pc technician and explained that anything he was about to tell me i already knew,it was a lie but he soon shut up when i said that and hasnt called me since about it

has anyone known of things like this to happen? if the guy was telling the truth then ill speak to him if he phones me again but i thought it was suspicious when he didnt seem to know my service provider

It's a scam, it's aimed at people who have no idea about computers and will just do as their told in blind confusion.

There've been threads about it before, seems like it's quite widespread.

Hang up and they'll just call be the next day and the next. Be rude, and they'll call back just to swear at you :p

lol i was sure that it was a scam but there is always a part of me that needs confirmation :P thanks for the replies

I would have simply asked him what "my area" was. I doubt that they'd be clued up enough to know what town your STD code related to.

tell him that you also work for a traffic monitoring company and that their computers are reporting a virus :p

They'll probably take you to event viewr, show you anythign thast an X or an error and say you infected and it need urgent attention!

Goto our site and let us remotely access your computer..yadda....yaddaa.

because you have taken they time you talk to them your details will possibly sent to an english call center so beware of VERY convincing calls from now on..

best to simply say "I know its a scam" and hang up
