As title really. I am currently running an i5 at 3.8Ghz and it does what I ask it to do, but as I am literally sat at my PC doing 3D work day in day out, I cant help but think that Sandybridge would boost my rendering speeds enough to justify it.

I wouldnt need to change anything else in my system, other then the motherboard and the CPU itself. I was thinking of getting an i7 1156 for the hyperthreading, but for the cost of the chip I may as well grab a Sandybridge setup.

I do use my PC heavily for 3D work most days, and thats before I go into working in game engines at the same time.

So what are your thoughts?

EDIT: Also I am thinking that my current motherboard and CPU setup is at least worth £150...so I could get a good chunk of money back there.

Could you just upgrade to an i7 CPU in your current motherboard you could then spend more on the CPU since you are not having to buy a new motherboard too?

Honestly, dont bother.

I am trying to ignore the part of my brain that is agreeing with you. Do you say that before there would be no increase in performance? Remember this isnt for gaming, but for working.

I have thought of this as I said, but they seem to be holding their value.

You could just sit tight and wait for say 6 months or so until Bulldozer comes out and then Intel will probably release something to compete with that so you might see a price drop. If there is no immediate need then I would follow stulids advice and not bother... for now ;)

You must have checked this out already? - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/191?vs=288

your i5 760 is running 1GHZ more than the stock one, yes you can overclock the 2500K to a easy 4.4GHZ, but the upgrade cost is still around £100-140 depending on which motherboard you want and also assuming you get £150 for your current CPU/Motherboard.

I would wait for IvyBridge and Bulldozer.

I was looking at those benchies a few days ago, I think thats what got me thinking about the upgrade really. Humm...I will hold tight for IvyBridge then by the looks of things. Bulldozer doesnt seem to interest me right now.
