Hi guys,

bought a couple of WD caviar greens to other week, and only got install them today. Im planning to put them in a 4 bay external HDD.

The 1st one was recognised in windows, and quick formatted without a hitch.

The 2nd however is recognised during POST, and can be seen in the computer management screen in windows 7.

However, it will not format at all. It just hangs, and if i go and come back later it has either 'stopped working' or has formatted it into a RAW format (which i somewhat disbelieve). If i try and access, it says it needs to be formatted.

I used the WD diagnostic tools and it sometimes recognises it, on other ocasssions its not or displays incorrect info which doesnt make any sense (like #s for example). I also tried fails the write zeros test with errors ocurring earlier on.

I have tried the hdd internally too, and same problems are seen.

This is the first hdd i have ever had problems with in over 12 years!

Thanks, whats WD's RMA service like?

Is it better to go through them or the etailer? (they were not purchased from here).

WD are superb, you wont have any issues with them, you can select Advanced RMA on there site and they will send you a new drive first before you send the broken one back, providing you provide you CC details.

You then have 30 days to send your broken drive back to WD.

Thats really good to hear. I wasn't sure if i had to go through the etailer as it was only bought a couple of weeks ago. (they'll prob tell me to go through WD anyway).

Im happy to go through advanced replacement, will they test the drive i send out to them?

Im pretty sure the drive is knackered as ive tried it in two comps, i just dont want to be charged by WD too if they find nothing wrong with it?!
