500GB External HDD Recommend?

Personally I would buy an external caddy and then you can choose the exact size of drive you want (plus change it out without voiding your warranty) doing this would cost a little more than £50 (I did something similar for about £75) but imho it would give you more options later.

Yes it is portable and its powered from the USB so you wouldn't need any external power source.

Cool, thanks I will probably do this.

I take it they are more reliable than Portable Hard Drives?

Is there any difference between 2.5" and 3.5" or is it just measurements for the case?

Thanks,
Matt

2.5" drives are smaller and generally used in laptops while 3.5" drivers are larger and used in desktops.

3.5" caddy's normally require extra power and will be bulkier so less portable.

The advantage of enclosure is you get to pick the drive you want and in the future you can upgrade to a larger drive if you need it. Reliability should be the same.

Ah, I take it this hard drive doesn't like playing .mkv files?

Was just watching an episode of something that I have as an .mkv file and it occasionally stuttered. Is this down to it being 5400RPM?

Thanks,
Matt Wilde

No. The read speed of even the slowest hard drive is many, many times the bitrate of even a full Blu-ray.
