New Xbox on the horizon ?

I'm expecting 2012 for the new Wii and 2012-2013 for the new Sony/MS consoles. In terms of Sony's 10 year plan for the PS3, that's perfectly reasonable, the PS2 is still supported now, and I'd say it only really dropped under the radar a few years after the PS3 was released. A 2012-13 release of the PS4 would put the PS3 at 6-7 years old, so 3-4 years of support with the new console simultaneously is what I'd imagine will happen.

I doubt the new wii will have better graphics. The base of customers will be too small to warrent making it the lead platform, so regardless if it is more powerfull it will be a staight port from 360 or ps3.

I don't quite understand the assumption that the "base of customers will be too small"? Hasn't the Wii outsold both the PS3 & 360 by quite some way worldwide?

Yep and it really does not matter about previous customer base as MS showed with the 360, if you bring something to the table at the right time then you can grab a whole heap of market share.

When the console is launched the base of customers with the new console will be a fraction of 360 or PS3, so even if it is more powerful companies like EA will still lead develop on 360 or PS3 and port across.

I'd say that's an unfair comparison.

The 360 was first to the market of the current generation, but they had built up a reputation with the Xbox already. It's not like it was their first console launch.

The 360 also offered huge differences over the PS2 and Gamecube:

- Proper built-in online gaming.
- Voice Chat
- HD Gaming (HD TVs only just became prevalent at the time)
- Wireless Controllers (as mostly standard)
- Harddrive storage
- Better graphics

The generation leap was quite big here in terms of what it offered as a whole package.

There isn't much a new generation came offer other than better graphics.
So for Nintendo to come to the market with a powerful console, but lack of third party and exclusives will get them nowhere.

The xbox had chat, live, hdd etc and it did not really impact on the Sony dominated market, the 360 was not that massive a leap from the Xbox infact the removal of standard HDD in every console seemed a backwards step, sure the graphics improved but that is normally a given with a newer console. Gamecube could have wireless pads also ;)

MS grabbed a lot of market share by bringing the console out at the right time, stealing a lead on their rivals. If Nintendo arrive with full HD gaming then I think they will take a big step in the hardcore market and off course they already have guaranteed AAA first title games they can always rely on.

I be very surprised if MS did announce a new console at E3. There haven't been any underground talks surfing with manufactures such at IBM. Developers have already asked MS and Sony to hold off releasing a new console as they only just got their programmers heads around the current gen HD consoles and any new console would cost too much for them right now.

The only company who really needs to release a new console is Nintendo which is obviously happening. Sony and MS can sit tight and focus on their motion sensor technology which hasn't been out for very long and needs improving.
