Hi Guys,

My SSD died the other day and I cant really "trust" it for a reinstall so I'm using an old Maxtor 500GB as my O/S drive. I was thinking of getting the Velociraptor 600GB SATA 3 drive but using it on a SATA 2 port as I've heard the Marvell SATA 3 on my mobo is a bit crappy. Any opinions please and will I lose a lot of performance using SATA 2?

Ta :)

RMA the SSD?

Cant be asked, might keep it and use it in another PC and see how it goes LOL.

The SSD is probably ok anyway, I think Win 7 has got currupted on it due to a power cut I had and it went funny a few days after. I get a BSOD when booting even if I try safemode. When my bro and I build a spare PC, I'll put it in that and test it for a while.

I don't think the Velociraptor will hit the SATA 2 limit.

Going back from an SSD to a mechanical drive would be noticeably slower in terms of responsiveness.

Velociraptors are such an enormous waste of money. Such a small speed advantage over a 7200rpm disk and so many times the price. Stick with the SSD or RAID 7200 drives would be my advice.

Why not just try restalling windows on your SSD drive with it in your PC and see if it works

I hate reinstalling LOL. I'll try to slipstream a sp1 install DVD and see how it goes

EDIT: What is the best software to use to clone my current O/S drive to the SSD? Windows backup doesn't work because the SSD is smaller (even though the data would fit easily).

I use 'Active Disk Image' boot disk to get a backup, and it doesn't mind moving to smaller partitions as long as theirs enough room for the data! (not free though)

Cheers mate:) Used it to copy my hard drive to the smaller SSD and worked like a charm. SSD seems tobe working fine so the powercut must have been to blame. I've updated the SSD firmware and also backed it up:)
