**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

So ****king bored of getting proxy rushed by protoss - is that the only tactic people use these days??

No matter how much I scout in/around my base there always seems to be a proxy pylon hidden away somewhere and then within 7 mins - 8 stalkers appear at my base - game over.

What race do you play? If Terran, wall off if you want to feel safe and have your first marine scout inside then outside your base then stick him under a xel naga tower. If zerg, build a spine crawler or 2.

The best tells of a 4 gate or similar is either the P only taking one gas or saving chrono boosts, if the nexus has 50 energy and the cyber core is nearly finished, there is a very good chance he's 4 gating.

Meant to send you this a while ago Alex, PvT no collosus/templar required :D.
(He was meching though :P).

wai u so good at Protoss? :p

To be fair, the main reason Terran lost is that you're way better than them. By the time you had enough to break the contain Terran shouldve had way more stuff. I imagine Terran just expected to win immediately with that one push because there was 0 macro going on, no extra scvs being built, few extra units being built...

well i just found out 2 spine crawlers and 2 queens can very easily def early marina push :P
Loving Spanishhwa(sp?) the Spanish Zerg style of play, late gas, mass drowns, spine crawler def, once you get massive economy going you can get anything you want

i mostly tech up and go Broodlord/corruptor/mutalisk flying death ball of pure win hehe
you can get level 3 air armour, level 3 melee dmg fast its so much fun!

Terran and I always wall off but still just seem to get rushed - was having a rant earlier post, decided, if it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander - marine rushed the next 3 opponents for 3 wins!:D:D

I play terran and just got promoted to Gold. I never wall against Toss as I generally go for a stim timing push which at my level is still fairly strong if done well so generally have enough to fight off a 4gate. I suck at end game vs toss anyway so if i dont end it after 10 minutes i lose 90% of the time!

Think i'm gonna start playing 2v2 as Toss to get a better understanding of their units.

hmm - 10 minutes after typing this i play toss and get zealot rushed...if only i had a wall

Yeah... changing race is pretty difficult. I'm in platinum at protoss, but playing against a zerg bronze friend as terran, I lost my first 5 or so games... Stupid baneling busts :p

2v2, rushes are very common, and people often neglect scouting. Also, 2v2ing with randoms can be seriously annoying :p

I didn't think it was necessary given the fact I didn't mention any result, I didn't say anything like "omg game four was epic" which would give away how many games were played even.

Anyway, I'll spoiler future stuff.

Considering that you said who was playing, and how many games it was a best of I'd say it was a spoiler, as not all matches are best of 5, and we now know the winner for all non group matches for 2 players until they play each other.

Thanks :/.

Hi,
A few weeks ago I_M_Weasel very kindly gave me a trial pass for Starcraft 2. I am now hooked, i bought it today and i am still playing through the SP which i think is actually very good.
I usually play Company of Heroes and some of the C+C's, but got a bit bored with COH.
What would be the best way to get in to multiplayer?
Should i play a few/lotsof games against the AI first, and at what difficulty?
I don't mind at all playing against the AI, so would be happy to practice for a while, i just don#t want to go online and be absolutely murdered as i start as it could potentially spoil the enjoyment. (as happened with COH to some extent)

Cheers

Well assuming it still does it you should get around 50 practice games (which is quite a lot) before you even need to do your placement games, which can give you a good intro to playing online.

Your best bet is to go here: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/Main_Page

Find a few random strategies for each race and use them against the AI (Go single player > play versus AI as you can pause these games indefinitely). Play on Very Easy to start with and just get used to playing, find what everything does, where things are build, how they are built and how the tech trees work, that sort of thing, then move up a notch and so on, don't go past hard as the AI starts to cheat (literally). Press buttons, build stuff and get a feel for what you like doing.

After this decide which race you prefer and start practising with it, try different builds etc.

Also watch these day9 dailies.

ok, Cheers mate. I'll check them out.
I bet it has a very steep learning curve online:)

Not really actually, it's just a very long learning curve, once you can play it's just time and practise. You get spikes occasionally, usually when you move into a new league but it levels out pretty quickly, SC2 has a pretty smart match making system so you should always maintain a 50% win rate.

I mean I'm only gold, started in bronze, took me a good 200 games to get here. Most of the stuff that gets you moving up the ladders is refinement rather then learning brand new things.

It certainly seems much more tactical than i'm used to. I am looking forward to having a few games.
I mean, with COH etc tactics are important but are done a little bit more 'on the fly' if you know what i mean. Build orders are still important, but not as important as in Starcraft for example

I'd say the best thing you can do to give yourself an early advantage in the game is to learn the hotkeys flawlessly. Once you instinctively know exactly what to press to do what you want to do, it will save you so much time that you'll be free to focus on build orders, timings, strategies and micro management.

At least the basic hotkeys yea, would definitely agree that it's a good thing to learn to improve playing speed (I dont mean apm, I mean time between wanting to do something and it actually happening).
Later on with some things you can get by with clicking once (for a mothership or an upgrade or something, once a game sort of stuff).

I would also suggest playing with the grid hotkey system. It can be a very very quick way of learning what button to push for each thing, and I know a fair people prefer it. I personally like the standard setup though :).

At the end of the day though, there are general ways that work for most people, but the best way to get into it is to just keep playing and see what works for yourself.

I myself started with the grid system and got on well with it, but I've changed back to defaults and I'm trying to learn those, which hasn't gone too well. Not that I play SC2 much at all, mostly just watch it.

Aye... the most important things to start with are:
1: keep improving your economy always (by building probes/scvs) and when necessary, expanding (don't delay too long)
2: Keep spending your money! So so important - 2000 minerals in the bank is 40 marines you could've had
3: Know how big your enemy's army is. If you are around equal economically, you don't want a bigger army than your enemy unless if you are going to attack, as a bigger army and smaller economy now means a smaller army AND smaller economy later. Equally, make sure you don't get caught out with a massive economy and loads of money, but an army only half the size when the enemy attacks. Scouting is KEY (even if you suicide a few units)

hello boys and girls!

Thought i'd drop by to say hello!

Started playing a little bit again.. Hows it all going? :) Has Rob taken over the world yet? :P

New patch now... From a Protoss point of view, seems like a nerf - slight buff to archon and sentry gateway build speed, but big nerf to pylon radius and warp gate tech research time - Protoss is going to have a lot harder time putting so much pressure on early. Hopefully, it will 'fix' PvP (although I always did quite like the 4gate micro battles :p )
