If you don't have an iPhone...

I've found the email on the iPhone to be the ideal way to deal with it. What I would like is for my place of work to upgrade Netware and get the mobile add-on so I can get work email onto it. What a lazy company Novell is. No way iPhone support needs to have a new backend put in.

Or even better just scrap Novell.:D

But have you checked email on other smartphone devices? They are all pretty much of a muchness. I didn't realise you needed any upgrading done to get email on phones!

I was going to say something stupid until I saw your edit. :p

That is exactly my point, Apple concentrate on the high end of the market, which is why they are precieved as expensive, yet in actual fact a comparable gadget will cost around the same (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less) from another manfacturer. As you said, time and time again people on both sides of the argument bring up the old "£350 Acer vs £1000 MBP" argument. Doesn't work, they are not comparable in the slightest.

Windows fanboy: Look Apple charge you £1000 for the same components I can get in this £350 Acer laptop... Wow... One is a cheap piece of junk and the other is designed to last from high quality materials.

Apple famboy: My £1000 MBP is so much better than your plastic windows laptop! Yeah, how about this nice high quality Dell/VAIO of a similar price...

Etc.

Mostly agree with you on this, the Apple laptops are priced decently for their market segment (which to be frank has little competition). I've currently got a Macbook Pro, and a Dell XPS sitting around in the house and the MBP is by far the better built piece of kit - and both are premium laptops.

Apple support is a bit weird tho, in many ways it's outstanding - you can get half an hours time with a well trained specialist to show you how to do some stuff; but in other ways it's lacklustre - you have to book time (with lead time) to go into a store to get a hardware issue fixed with a turnaround of a few days.

For me having a tech showing up the next day at my house or place of work to swap out a borked motherboard is more important than the free training, for other people the balance is different.

Is that a dig at 'BlackBerry'??... :D

geddit... Torches... BlackBerry 9800... BlackBerry Torch!...

I'll get me coat!! :(

LOL i torched mine a few mths ago....as much as i wanted to love it, i did at the start but then slowly got bored of it plus i found it a bit too bulky so sold it and bought a white BB 9780 which will tide me over till the new 9900 Bold Touch is out...absolutely droolworthy BB if i ever saw one...should be out summer time i hope.

I also have the iphone4 32gb which i bought last yr sim free...but tbh the only things i use it for is the ipod, apps ie games and videos and whatsapp..to keep in touch with my iphag mates:p....for what i use it for, it suits me well and i do like the range of apps on the iphone....its a shame that BB hasnt quite got there regarding apps but tbh i only use my BB for emails, calls, the odd text here or there and BBM really....its my daily workhorse whereas the iphone4 is my multimedia toy....and yes i know i could have got an ipod touch but then i wouldnt have been able to download apps on the go and neither could i stream radio stations courtesy of the tunein app;).

Its probably the first and last apple product ill ever buy although maybe next yr ill look at upgrading to a newer iphone...wont bother with this yrs model if there is one going to be released....am contemplating on getting a macbook pro 13" laptop to replace my aging Dell XPS laptop but dont know if i can really justify the cost of an apple laptop compared to the window laptops out there.

But if i do have to say something....apple are masters are marketing....they create so much hype for their products when in a nutshell, they arent all that great especially with the closed nature of their OS's both ipad and iphone...well closed until you jailbreak it, which tbh isnt all that great.

Each to their own though...i love both my iphone and BB as they fit my needs perfectly well...ive had a few android handsets and after a few weeks i grew tired and bored of them so sold them...nice hardware in them but thats about it really.

As a person who has used Android, WP7 and iPhone i can safely say that WP7 has the best user interface, iPhone has the best Apps and Android has the best customisation.

I have an iPhone and the main reason for that is that i have invested a lot of money into this phone plus the Apps are much better that WP7 and Android.

And so they should be! They've had at least 2 years head start and a single hardware spec to work on :p But the race is closing, Look at Android market 12 months ago and look at it now - The difference is night and day, so imagine +12 months from now and the kinds of apps there will be plus games. Quad Core Android and WP7 phones....

I direct you to this BBC News Article - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13284156

Developers prefer working with App Store because they actually make more money which means that the Android store will just be full of copycat apps which are just rubbish.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe that the major game companies (SEGA, EA etc) don't create apps for Android, and i believe it's due to pirating.

The only competition that iPhone has in regards to Apps is WP7 and that's only because of the Xbox Live intergration and the money that MS will throw at game companies, but even with that their price structure is all wrong.

An App on the iPhone cost 59p, yet the same app on WP7/Android is £2.49 - why is that? I play a lot of gaming apps on my iPhone but i would never spend more than £2 on an App. That is why i believe iPhone will remain at the top of App sales and be favoured by Devs.

I think you missed the point. Android market (Like the WP7 one right now too) is still developing. In 12 months it's taken a major change and in another 12 months it will undergo more major improvements.

I see absolutely no difference in all 3 smartphone OS vendor's Market systems once they've all had equal amounts of development time and consumer usage - In relative terms.

Google are aware that there is a gap in the Market where Open<>Closed collide and this will be sorted but for now things are growing fast.

Competition is always good from consumer point of view.

I'd love to see at least 3 major players in smartphone business.

Just wish big companies would develop on all 3 platforms.talking about the companies that mobile phones apps are a sideline and creates them no wealth and can't be tapped into from third parties. Good example are banks and mobile phone operators.

I hope you're right.

I'd love to move over to WP7 and have the same apps at the same price.

I just hope it happens :)

The iPhone benefits from more unified hardware but it mainly has time on its side. More and more devs are starting to port/make android games though. People follow the market and the market for android is growing fast. In a couple of years, all the top mobile games will come out on android and the app store at the same time.

You say the main companies don't make android games but we have already seen sony announce an android game store, ea already make android games, unreal have made their engine for android and more will follow. Big companies are getting involved.

Ah, totally forgot about the Xperia Play! Forgive me :(

I do doubt it'll take off though - price for games and battery life are a big factor in it's success and i can't see the battery lasting a whole day and i can't see people spending more than £5 on a mobile app (though that might just be me :) )

I wasn't talking about the xperia play. Sony have announced an android app store for playstation titles, it's not out yet - called Playstation Suite.

Edit: and prices for professional games are definitely heading towards £5+. With increasing power, the costs required to code and make art assets for these "mobile games" is increasing fast. You'll always be able to buy games for £1 but epic, ea, and sony will be charging more and more for better quality games.
